I need new jeans. Recommendations?

I've been wearing the same pair of jeans for about 7 years now (which I'm embarrassed to admit) and I just realized that they are getting ragged. I have other pairs of jeans, but these are the most comfortable so I wear them all the time. I got them at TJMaxx and they are some weird brand so I don't know if I will find them again. So, I want to go out searching for a new pair of jeans. Here is what I'm looking for:

1. They need to come in "long" because I have a 34" inseam.

2. I'd like them to have Lycra or some sort of spandex in them because I find that it's more comfortable and that it moves with you better.

3. I want a dark color like a dark navy blue. I don't want them to have a "wash" where they look worn in the knees, thighs, etc. (because that's what my current jeans look like!)

4. I need to either be able to try them on at the store or buy them online at a place with free returns.

5. I like a boot-leg or straight-leg type cut.

  • Kendra! 7 years? girl...

    ;-)

Go to the Gap, they have bunch of different styles and washes. I'd skip Old Navy, their jeans are never long enough for me even in their long sizes.

eta: these would probably be good for you: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=48598&vid=1&pid=673948

another eta: these are straight leg ones that would be good, too...I have these and when I'm not hugely pregnant, I love them :-)

and for Gap, just get the long size...you aren't quite tall enough for the actual "tall" sizes

  • I recently bought a pair of Long and Lean jeans from the Gap that I love.  I'm petite but I"m pretty sure they carry them in long.  The wash is dark and it's the right mix of waist height, slim thigh and boot cut.  I happened to buy them on sale and I wish I had bought another pair.
  • My favorite jeans are Gap Long and Lean. I think they meet all of your criteria. Even if they don't, Gap has many different styles of jeans, in different lengths, and I'm fairly certain you can find something you like there.

  • I have heard great things about Ann Taylor LOFT's jeans, and have been meaning to try them out. I know they have about 8 gajillion different types.
  • Ditto pps on the Gap Long & Lean. They come in short (ankle?), regular and long. I love them!

Gap jeans look horrible on me (I have wide hips but small waist). I've had the best luck with Ann Taylor Loft jeans.

  • If you're investing in jeans for the long haul, I recommend going to Nordstrom and getting fitted. It may be $100 for a pair of jeans, but the variety of brands, fits and free tailoring is like getting a makeover for your lower half.

  • Am I the only person who can't wear gap long and lean b/c of how they stretch so soon after putting on?  When i wore them they got saggy in the butt so quickly and I was constantly pulling them up.

My favorite pair of jeans are my hudsons.  I also like osme of the lucky jeans, but am not sure if their washes will work for you.  There is a lucky store in montgomery mall, as well as a nordstrom where they sell hudson.  I'd suggest checking out nordies and lucky.

  • Thanks ladies! There's an Ann Taylor and Gap at White Flint Mall so I may head there at lunch. It is definitely time for some new jeans.

Thanks. If I don't find anything at White Flint, I can head to Montgomery Mall since that's also close.

  • I'd also suggest Lucky Brand- they have a lot of the darker washes, and you can get different washes in store, online and in department stores (Macy's that have designer sections and Nordstrom carry them)- so if you don't find what you like but find a good fit, you can almost certainly find it elsewhere. I am curvy with a smaller waist and a short inseam- I wear their Sweet N Low style (which is actually a midrise boot cut jean).

Ditto LOFT jeans.  I buy a pair every time I pass the store.  LOVE them.

I've also had great luck with NY&Co jeans if you are looking for a nice dark wash with some stretch.  If you want bargain basement cheap, Old Navy's Diva jeans are great too, and it seems like they are always on sale for $29 when I am there.

  • I am totally in love with two pairs of jeans I bought at Filene's Basement in DC on my lunch hour.  They fit all of your criteria, but I don't know, maybe they're really $$ when you're not paying Filene's prices.  The brand is Salt Works New York City.  They're medium rise, have a plenty of "give" in them, and I bought dark blue and they haven't faded one bit - I've probably washed them ten times already.
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • I like the gap regular with the long inseam better than the 'tall' fit. I prefer the bootcut over the long and lean. Other favorites that come in long are jcrew, madewell and lucky.

I have a pair of DL1961 jeans that I love but they are pricey. However, I think they are totally worth it.

They are a little snug when I first put them on, but then they feel comfy after an hour or so. I think most denim with stretch is like this.

  • I would also add Calvin Klein to the list - their normal size is pretty long though (33"), so I don't know if their talls would be too tall.  You can usually find them at Macy's or other department stores.

I have a pair of bootcut Gap jeans that are fine, but I have this problem with their trouser jeans (which I think have more stretch) - they fit great the first day I wear them after washing them, but fall down any time after that.

  • Yet another vote for Gap Long & Lean.  They have a little stretch, always fit me great, and they aren't low-cut like almost every other pair of jeans out there!  So great when you're constantly bending/squatting/sitting on the floor with toddlers.
    ? ?????????????????????????????????????????
  • Ditto Gap Long & Lean - but I have to say my all-time favorite are KUT jeans.  They are amazing, thick enough to contain any jiggle, still a little stretchy, not cut so low that your undies hang out when you bend over - fabulous.  Nordstrom sells them but they're pricey there, to be honest I buy mine at Nordstrom Rack and pay half the price.  I've also had some success with Lucky jeans, also from Nordstrom Rack, but I find their fit isn't consistent, you'd really have to try and see how they fit before you commit.

Just chiming in to say you aren't the only one. :) I like them enough, but the knee/butt areas get so stretched out within an hour of putting them on! But they're the only jeans I can wear with my heeled boots. Maybe I bought a pair with a different fabric content or something. (My two different washes of Lucky jeans have two different fabric contents.)

Lucky Sweet 'N Lows changed my life. Seriously. I bought some on clearance at Lord & Taylor once. But every body is very different!

  • I used to LOVE Lucky Brand Sweet 'N Lows and then I had my kids and the rise was too low. My mom belly hangs over the waistband.  Attractive, I know.  Gap jeans never worked till after I had my kids - I guess my body just changed a lot.
  • Well, I want to Gap on my lunch break and tried the Long and Lean. I loved the color, fit and everything except that the bottoms were a little too wide for what I wanted. So, this weekend I'll try to head over to Montgomery Mall or check out some of the other options you all suggested. Unfortunately, my shopping time is somewhat limited so I hope I can find some new ones soon.

did you try the curvy? that's why I didn't recommend the long&lean style, I think they are little too flare-y. the sexy boot is also less flared.

also, I didn't recommend it because I didn't think you'd want to drop that kind of cash, but if you want a great pair of designer jeans, come to Arlington and go to the Denim Bar. It's at Pentagon Row and it's faaaaaabulous--they have ton of different brands and great personalized service. It will set you back a bit, but (IMO) it's totally worth it. I'll be happy to meet you there if you ever want to check it out.

  • i've been liking lucky brand for awhile, not cheap but they just look better than any jeans i've bought elsewhere. i think the one that works best for me is the "sweet and low" but they have a bunch of different styles and the different washes/lengths in each style. not sure if they are at the leesburg outlet but if they are, i'd recommend going. over the summer i scored two pairs for like $69 (which is cheaper than one pair at their regular stores)

Oh, I should've tried Curvy. I did try the regular boot cut but they didn't fit right. I was in somewhat of a hurry and there was only one sales person in the store so I couldn't get help from someone to find my size.

I would possibly be up for going to Denim bar. The only thing is that if I'm going to spend a lot of money, I want to wait until I lose my last 5 lbs which will be at least another month but probably more like 6 weeks (at which point you'll have a new baby). I guess maybe I should just wait a bit and find a pair of jeans that are absolutely perfect in my new weight. So, maybe I need to wait to make this purchase.
