tell me about Atlanta

DH has a conference in Atlanta in June and I thought I'd go down and join him for a few days and check out the city. I've never been before, except for the airport, and that doesn't count anyway.

The hotel hasn't been established yet, but it will be very likely in the downtown/business area (they always are). Is there public transit that I can use to get around while he's at his seminars? What about the area?

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

Re: tell me about Atlanta

  • Atlanta has MARTA, which is our train/bus system. I have never taken the bus, but have taken the train often. I wouldn't, personally, go on it at night alone, but you are completely fine during the day. The downtown area is very business oriented and not a lot goes on at night. If you stay downtown you would be near to the Aquarium, Coke Museum, CNN Center. There is the High Museum in Midtown, or Atlanta History Center in Buckhead. Stone Mountain is further out but nice, and we have a Zoo.

For shopping you could go to Lenox and Phipps, which are both in Buckhead and on Marta.

Atlanta has some awesome restaurants as well.

  • Hi! I live in Atlanta. :)  If you have the chance to pick your hotel I would not stay downtown. I would stay in Midtown preferably or just further North. The area is nicer and way more walkable. Downtown Atlanta can be down right scary sometimes.

We do have a Metro system. It isn't the best and as a woman I wouldn't care to ride it late at night alone with people or my DH I would. Atlanta is very much a driving city, but during the day Marta is fine. It has two major rail lines going North/South and East/West. Marta can get you to the interesting sites in downtown, CNN, the World of Coca-cola, the Aquarium and the Centennial Olympic park are all near a Marta station and easy walked too. You can also easily get Northward towards Midtown and Buckhead.

Midtown has a lot of great restaurants and has a lot more nightlife going on. It is also home to Piedmont Park. Atlanta's "central park," which is a fun place to rent skates or a bicycle. Midtown is also where you'll find the High Museum of Art, the Symphony and the Museum of Design. Atlantic Station is about 1/2 a mile from the Midtown Marta Station (They have a free shuttle to it) is Atlanta's outdoor mall. On a pretty day it can be a fun experience to walk around outside and on Thursday/Fridays in the summer time they have free concerts or movies.

Buckhead is where the major malls are. Lenox and Phipps plaza.

Randomly if you are a TopChef fan there are a lot of restaurants in town from former contestants. Richard Blais' Flip can be a lot of fun. If you want great BBQ head to Fox Brothers it can't be beat. It's crowded but worth it.

June is also a good time to come here it will be hot, but hopefully not in the 100's. :)

  • There are some nice hotels downtown, but you won't want to wander around downtown at night.  The business people all leave the area so it is pretty sketchy after 6:00ish.  You may want to consider staying in Midtown.  If you stay downtown and want to go out in the evenings, I'd rent a car.

You can get around to a few places on Marta, but it's not great.  Atlanta is definitely a driving city.  It's worth it to rent a car, although parking at the nicer hotels can get fairly expensive.  If you have to use Marta, you'll be able to get to a few of the major attractions, but don't ride it alone at night.

As far as stuff to do, I'd recommend going to the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola, and the CNN Studio tour.  These are all downtown and area great things to do alone during the day.
