Dropping the afternoon nap?

Have any of you dropped your child's daily nap?  If so, how old were they?  C (2 1/2) still takes a 2 hour nap each day at daycare.  Well, they say he takes a nap, I think many times it is just quiet time with the lights off.

However, when we have him home on Fridays and weekends, he refuses to take a nap and his behavior seems fine.  He doesn't get whiny or throw fits because he's tired.

Do you think it might be time to stop enforcing quiet time in the afternoons if he doesn't seem interested?

Re: Dropping the afternoon nap?

  • That's around the time we started dropping naps.  In the winter we skipped naps more often then in the summer.  A morning outside in the summer almost always made them still need a nap.

  • Jackson will be 3 Saturday and still takes a nap.   I think I need it more than him :) -  recently he does fight us on the weekends, but I still encourage "rest time."  he can read books in his room for 30 minutes instead of sleeping.   sometimes he falls asleep other times he doesn't.   if he does not nap, he is pretty brutal in the evening :)
  • Just within the last month has Sophia been able to skip her afternoon nap and still act reasonably.  I know lots of mom's whose little ones were done around 2 1/2 or 3, though.  I still encourage Sophia to rest for an hour by reading or playing quietly alone in her room.  She doesn't have to lay down, and can even move around her room, she just can't leave it.

  • Natalie is 2 1/2 and still takes a nap every day.  She sleeps longer for us on the weekends and we frequently have to wake her up so she will sleep at night!

But, my nephew started dropping his nap when he was younger than 2.  Some days he will fall asleep, but most days he doesn't.  I think they still do rest time.  It's really up to you.  If he's fighting it and isn't cranky in the evening, then skip rest time.

  • Katen stopped napping well around 2.5 and at 3 dropped them pretty much. I still (at age 4) ask her to have quiet time on most days (so she doesn't wake her sister mostly, because she's an energizer bunny) and she's happy to oblige if I keep her "quiet box" filled with different things from time to time.
