Question about NST

I am a part of a group and many seem to be opposed to having NST done while PG. Is having a NST done weekly a bad thing? If I didn't have NST I would never have known that Peyton's heart rate was going down with my contractions and that is the reason I had a c-section 4 hours after my appointment because she was not handling the contractions. I hate to think what would have happened if I had refused to do a NST. I had weekly NST and weekly ultrasounds to measure fluids (starting around 32 or 34 weeks). Maybe I was naive and should have refused.

They are a great group of ladies but it just took me by surprise how many of them said that this girl should refuse to have them done.

I don't want to start a debate, just wondering if having weekly NST is a bad thing.

ETA: She did fertility treatments.

Re: Question about NST

  • newbie to this pg thing. what's nst?
  • It is a non-stress test.

They attach a belt to your abdomen to measure fetal heart rate and another belt to meaure contractations. You rest in a chair for 20-30 minutes. My OB started them around 32 or 34 weeks.

It really is not a big deal (at least to me), so not sure why everyone is saying refuse them, you don't have to do them, etc.

They probably don't do it that much if you don't have any problems, but this girl did a fertility treatment and so I think that is one reason why they want to do them on her. I think that is the reason I had them too.

Maybe I am just naive and don't understand it all. I am just curious it is such a big deal to get one.

  • sounds like there's absolutely no way that could hurt the baby in any way, so I don't see what the big deal is either!
  • I had 3 or 4 when I was pg with Delaney. I didnt have any with Emersen. I don't see what the big deal is with them and I happily complied with my drs request to do them. I would rather know sooner rather than later if there is a problem with my baby.

  • I had them every week from 29 on. I can't see how it would hurt the baby. Its non invasive. Weird.....

  • I didn't have any but I had a very healthy pregnancy. I had one U/S at 18 weeks and that was it. They did put the monitors on once I was at the hospital which was good because Ellie also started struggling with the contractions and with her heart rate dropping.
