Current passport turn around?

I may be being overly cautious, but does anyone have experience or knowledge of the current passport return around time?  I'm renewing/changing my name on mine and have 11 weeks until travel.

I planned on mailing at lunch, but just want some reassurance that I don't need to expediate. Trave.state.gov currently says if you need it in less than 2 wks; so I'm fine right?

Re: Current passport turn around?

  • Mine only took 8 weeks and was with my first forgetting to sign the application, and then not including all my previous passports.  I would have been closer to 5 or 6 had I not kept messing up.
  • Travel.state.gov says 2-3 weeks door-to-door for expedite and 4-6 weeks for routine.

However, I can assure you they rarely change those estimates even though this is "slow" season and the turn around for a routine renewal is about 3 weeks.

You'll be fine as long as you send in all of the required documents the first time around (i.e. your ORIGINAL marriage certificate or divorce decree, which ever you are using for the name change).

Yep; have current passport, marriage certif, new pics, application and check all in hand. Thanks!
  • I just sent mine in last week to get renewed, and according to my bank statement they've already cashed the check.  I'm leaving for my trip in late March and didn't expedite it, but I sent it by priority mail since it has my personal info and documents.  I'm sure it will be on time with 11 weeks to go.

My only suggestion is to look over it several times to make sure you did everything exactly how they want it and included everything needed so there's no chance for delay.

Thanks. I sent it priority also and we leave Mar 29th so I'm thinking I should be fine.
  • I got my toddler's passport in 7 days this past spring with no expediting.  I was really impressed!
  • You should be fine. DH sent his out the week of Thanksgiving and had his new one in hand before Christmas.

  • Maybe I sent mine in at a slow time but I was seriously amazed at how fast it was - postmarked & sent to processing center on Dec 26, 2011 and received new passport Jan 5, 2012 and that's including the New Year holiday!   I had one previously and only changed my name so not sure if that made things go faster than a brand new request.
  • I ordered mine on 12/16/11 and got it back less than 3 weeks later (a completely new passport...not a renewal).  The lady that processed mine said she hasn't seen them take over 8 weeks in a long time so I would think you'll be fine :)
