Shipyard Applehead

Anyone try it?

I was all excited when I saw it in the grocery store yesterday, until I remembered that I can't drink for another 8 months!  Crying

Re: Shipyard Applehead

  • Sounds nasty but I'm thinking hubby might like it.  I'm not a beer fan.  I'm feeling bad for you though Kimberly! :)

  • I actually stopped by the brewery last week to get a 6-pack and, I feel like Debbie Downer, but it tastes almost exactly like the Pumpkinhead - no distinguishable apple flavor and heavy on the fall spices.  I think Pumpkinhead is fine, but it's definitely not my favorite pumpkin beer, so...I'm kind of sad about it.  DH and I had been looking forward to it for so long - they told us they release it in other areas before they distribute locally, which is odd.

This.  It's a bit lighter on the tongue, but tastes very similar to Pumpkinhead.  It seems to be a weird beer to drink this time of year.  I'm actually drinking one right now. Stick out tongue  I love Federal Jack's pumpkin ale ( I know it's brewed by shipyard, but according to the brewer they use different water and I SWEAR it's different in taste :-)  )

My sister posted a picture of her drinking it on FB and someone said the exact same thing - that it tastes exactly like Pumpkinhead. Probably why my sis likes it, I think Pumpkinhead is the only beer she'll drink.

  • Ok, I feel better now!

I like Pumpkinhead a lot so I'd probably like the Applehead too, but at least now I know I'm not missing out on any great new taste.

When I was in VA for Christmas, my dad has some pumpkin ale he got at Trader Joe's. I tried one and thought, "this tastes just like Pumpkinhead." I looked at the bottle and it said Kennebunkport Brewing Co., which is the name Shipyard uses for their beers at Trader Joe's outside this area. So I was drinking Pumpkinhead!

  • I like Applehead, but then again, I am a huge fan of Pumpkinhead and flavored beers in general, so it was right up my alley!

  • Okay, I'm happy to hear that I wasn't just missing something.  I mean, I guess it's technically a way to extend Pumpkinhead enjoyment, since the Applehead comes out later in the year.  I know it's not a cider, but I think I was still expecting something similar.

  • I was pumped to see it but haven't tried it.  I'm sure I'll like it (I love Pumpkinhead.), but I was hoping for something cider-y.
  • I was also expecting a cider taste, or something hinting at apple... but I totally didn't get that at all.  However, I did like it and it's a close second to Pumpkinhead.  It has a similar fall spice-like taste, but is lighter.  Since I prefer light beer and pumpkinhead is my favorite flavored, it's the perfect mix for me.

I'm just wondering why they released it now?  And if it's going to be seasonal, will its season always fall in the winter?  If so, I think that's a bit odd.

Yeah, it was weird - DH had gone into the brewery before Christmas because we wanted to bring some back to NY for our families to try and they told us it wouldn't be distributed around the local area until after the holidays, but was available in the other areas they distribute.  I feel like we should get first priority!  They didn't specify whether this was going to be an annual thing or not.
