Spouse education funding

Hey ladies,

I don't post as much any more but D is Air NG.

I'm thinking about going back to school and I am trying to research what funding is available for me to use.  I don't think he/I/we qualify for Post 9/11 or yellow ribbon as D has not deployed or been activated though there may be one in his future.

D remembers them mentioning something in basic that even NG spouses have 2000 in funds available. Does anyone know what this is called?

Any phrases or programs I can google would be a great help.  Though. I'm not looking for anyone to do my research for me links are always welcome and appreciated.

Is the Montogomery GI Bill transferable? (From what I did find so far this is what he qualfies for and I only found a brief paragraph on the VA website.)

TIA

Re: Spouse education funding

  • Let me work my way through the questions:

First, if he has never been activated then finding funding is going to be difficult. It may be more beneficial to seek private fudning. However, if he does get activated then...

Second, check out MyCAA - Career Advancement Accounts here http://www.military.com/education/content/money-for-school/military-spouse-career-advancement-accounts-financial-aid.html

Third, the post 9/11 GI Bill is transferrable but I would never recommend it. If you husband qualifies, have him go to school full time in a brick and mortar instiution to further his education. He will receive 100% of the BAH he receives now, which can be used toward your education or children's.

  • Thanks!

You gave me a GREAT start.

  • Your DH must be on title 10 orders for MyCAA.  Also, he must be enlisted or an O1 or O2 (nothing higher).  It can only be used for an associates or a certificate type program.

Is your dh a member of any military organizations?  Many will give spouses scholarships!

  • I just want to throw out that there are TONS of scholarships and grants for spouses/family members that you might qualify for.  A lot of these go unclaimed because people don't know about them or nobody applies.  Your base education center should have more information on what is available and what you qualify for.

    Enlisted up to E5.

Really?  I didn't know that!  They keep changing and making it more difficult for anyone to use.  I was enrolled in it, got half way through my program and then got kicked out.  :(
