Decided on a vacation spot. Money wise seems a cruise to Alaska seems the best of both worlds. Any recommendations on what cruise lines, which one to take (scenery wise) and any excursions to go on or avoid?
Re: Alaska Cruises
At sea, heading to Lisbon, Portugal
We've done rccl (round trip Hubbard Glacier) while we loved the trip, they are more limited in ports/permits. We are looking at a Celebrity one (Southbound with Denali before the cruise have credit to use) for later this summer. If we didn't have the credit to use, I'd go with Holland or Princessthey have the most permits for Glacier Bay. Seem to have everything down.
The Alaska board on CRuise critic is really helpful.
Favorite trip- renting a car in Skagway and driving up the South Klondike Highway following Murray's guide $5 google should give you the link, he updates in the spring. We went as far as Emerald Lake (siggy pic)
Followed by helicopter trip to the glacier, these trips are the most cancelled due o the weather. Whale watching in Icy Stait point with FISHEs only 6-8 people max on the boat.
Air fare to Vancouver is high, but flying to Seattle and taking the Amtrak Cascades train is a nice alternative. The train goes right along the sound and is really pretty for most of the trip. Nice views of Mt Baker.
Cancer sucks.
We did a round trip cruise out of Vancouver on HAL the last week of May 2010. The comments people make about an older average age on HAL are true, but I didn't mind. We were with my parents, and the food, service, etc. on the ship were great.
Make sure you pick a cruiseline that has all the permits required to go into Glacier Bay. Not all do, and it's GORGEOUS. Don't miss it.
Helicopter ride to the glacier is a must do in Juneau. Seriously, if you can only do one excursion this is the one I would recommend.
In Ketchikan we went snorkeling. I know it sounds odd but I thought it was great! They give you a full body wet suit and while it was chilly at the beginning, it got warm quickly.
