S/O of Gifts from Ex's--selling wedding set

For those of you that sold your wedding set, or have sold anything like that in the past, where/how did you do it?  I have contacted a company in Houston that will buy the diamonds, or at least the large one, but I want to make sure I'm not getting scammed so I am nervous about how to proceed.

They want to set up an appointment to see the diamonds (which is fine) but I don't like the idea of being in a pressure situation and don't want them to take my extremely young look to be naive.

We didn't have kids and I doubt I'll ever get around to resetting it so I'd rather have the money to pay for a trip or something than have the rings lying around gathering dust.

Help help!!

  • I haven't done this but i'd get an independent appraisal and see if they can tell you wholesale and retail value so you know what your bottom line is for selling them.

Then get a few price quotes from jewelers willing to buy them.

  • i took DH's old band and my original wedding band (diamonds kept falling out, i was too rough on it) to a local jewelry store and sold it.  i didn't feel pressured at all!
  • I would say take FI with you if you aren't comfortable.  Or, just go hear what they have to say, then play the helpless female card and say that you can't make a decision like that without your FI.  I'm by no means a girl who can't deal on her own, but sometimes it's just easier.  It tends to make people back off pretty quickly!

  • I sold my ex-FI's ring to a friend from college..and then I returned the money to my ex.

I highly recommend Jay Freedman for selling of rings.

I've never sold jewelry to him, but knew him back in the day.  what an awesome guy!
