random question (OB/GYN related)

I had my annual appointment today (just the regular annual check-up, nothing fancy or exciting) and was reminded how much I adore my OB/GYN.  And then that got me thinking about how we just bought a house that's 30 minutes away from said doctor and the hospital from which she works (though the hospital and her office are close to my work).

So then I started wondering what might happen when we finally decide to start a family.  Do people keep doctors who are 30 minutes away???  Do I have to find a new doctor, because I REALLY don't wanna.  Or can doctors work at other hospitals, especially if they're in the same...what's it called when it's just a different "branch" or whatever of the same network of hospitals?  Yeah, that.

Help a cousin out

Re: random question (OB/GYN related)

  • Sure people do. It would be convenient to have your monthly then weekly appointments close to work. I had Maggie at a hospital 25 minutes away.

  • Yes. No. Depends, ask her what her privileges are.

  • Doctors have privileges at multiple hospitals usually.  I wouldn't think 30 minutes would be that big of a deal, as long as you don't mind the trip frequently late in your pg.

  • We moved and I am now about 30 mins from my obgyn and the hospital I'd want to use for having the babies.  We are currently TTC and I don't plan on changing.

  • My drive to midwives/hospital was 30 minutes (more in traffic).  Wasn't that bad.  Got a bit annoying with going weekly in the final month, but not a dealbreaker.  Wasn't fun in labor, but was worth it for the care I received.

  • I'm pretty sure that no matter where I go in San Diego it's always at least 30 minutes away, so I wouldn't think twice about it. In traffic our hospital could have been up to an hour away, which would have been a problem if I was mouse, but my babies need coaxing to leave the womb so it wasn't an issue.

  • I would find out their priveledges at other hospitals. But, for your ob appointments (monthly then weekly) you are not going to be able to take that time out of the classroom. So having an ob close to work is going to be essential for you IMO as a fellow school person. And since super fast mouse labor is rare I think you'll be ok with 30 min to the hospital.

Ditto this. Completely worth the amazing care I got.

I don't have kids yet but I would have to agree with this - I would rather drive 30 minutes and love my doctor/appreciate the care I was given than go to someone closer that treated me poorly.

  • My ob is about 25 minutes as is the hospital.  Totally worth the drive to go to who you like.

  • Thanks guys :). I don't know why that wigged me out so much, but I was just overthinking all of it. I'm just used to living right down the street. But my work is right down the street from her so it sounds like I'll be in good shape. Winger's right, I really can't take time off so being close will be super important. All of this junk is still hypothetical at this point, it just got my wheels spinning yesterday
  • My sister actually had no choice in the matter and had to go with a doctor/hospital about 30-40 mins away given that there are few high risk ob/gyns who specialize in type 1 diabetic pregnancies.
