nursing and binky help

Anyone who was/is nursing introduce a binky before a month?  E never took a binky, but Isla is a sucking machine.   She is constantly trying to suck her hands, or anything she can get in her mouth.  Half the time she's 'nursing' she's just suckling and not really drinking, and my boobs are sore!

Re: nursing and binky help

  • We offered it, he didn't catch on to it really well until he was older though. I wish he would have cause I hated feeling like a human pacifier. I think "they" say that you can offer it as early as you want, but if you start noticing that they are having a hard time latching, to take it away for a couple days and then try again.

  • L got it in the hospital. Now she only gets it at nap and bedtime.
  • Oh yeah, I did with both right away.  Jack got the hang of it and loved it, Joah, not so much.  He'll take it if he has to, but he's not a big fan (and I wish he was!).  We never had any nipple confusion or whatever.

Though I'm sure you know this, even if she's just pacifying herself on you right now, it's helping to establish a healthy milk supply.   Hang in there and try to let her nurse as much as possible for at least another week or so.

    Hope everything's going well!

  • What brand are those blue binkies?  We have one we've tried to give to Isla, but it's a little big, and I don't like the bulb shape on the end.
  • Soothies are the blue ones. Wubbanub (with the stuffed animal attached) worked better for Charlie. He was the same way... my poor tatas will never be the same :)
  • Gave both boys binkies in the hospital. Never a binky "pusher" but both liked them from time to time, especially naps/bedtime. No problems BF either kid at all. We used the green Soothies.
  • Both of my kids started in the hospital and we never had an issue with bf and confusion.  I still ended up being a pacifier more than I would have liked in the beginning (think 7 months at least) but the bink had it's place and it was used profusely.

    thanks to jennied :)

  • The nursery gave Colin the soothie (really hard nipple) in the hospital and after that he wouldn't latch to nurse. I recommend giving her one that's really soft and as nipple-like as possible if you want to try one.

    Cracky is wise.

  • I did after a few days.  I was really paranoid about nipple confusion.  The nurses hated me for it.
  • We did in the hospital -- between being a human pacifier and him sucking on his fingers with long nails - I was worried he was going to cut his mouth!

We use the green soothies - the ones they give in the hospital (Bergan has 2 you can choose from, and I had already bought some of the soothies). He has it attached to him at all times! He mostly just uses it when he's tired, but sometimes just because...

  • by the way we used the advent ones and never had any issues. I'm not a fan of pacifiers but the nurses suggested it in the hospital to get us through a rough night. L has never been one to just nurse for sucking though. She's either on or off.
  • My kid is a sucking machine. Owen didn't take one for a couple of months. Anelie took one right away. She's not *as* addicted as she was for a while there, but we usually have one available. We don't give it to her for no reason. We save it for when she's fussy, mainly because if she doesn't really need it she'll play with ur and chuck it and we'll never see it again.

  • Neither of our kids were/are binky kids.

I've tried with Ian.  He loves to comfort nurse and won't take a bink from me.  Those first couple weeks are so tough.  Hang in there!

  • Sam got his binky at 6 days old. I had become a human pacifier and couldn't take it. My mom convinced me to give it a try and it was totally fine, no nipple confusion, no trouble nursing, just a happier, soothed baby and a happier mom.

He will only take the avent binkies.

Now he only has them to sleep.  One in his mouth and one in his hand.  The cutoff at 18 months is going to suck (no pun intended).
