My husband and I are visiting Maui in February. Several days will be spent at a convention, so we really will only have 3 or 4 days for activities.
Any recommended activities/must see/restaurants? Also, should we get a rental car (the resort charges $30 a day, so I would rather not get one if it's not needed).
Thanks!
Re: Maui in February
We've been to Maui twice now and I can't imagine not having a car. Some of the best parts of our trip were just driving around and exploring the island. $30/day is pretty steep, I agree, but how often do you get to go to Maui? I'd personally justify it for the trip.
As for activities, since it'll be winter, I would recommend a whale watching tour. We took one out of Lahaina with the Pacific Whale Foundation and really enjoyed it.
We also enjoyed ziplining in Haleakala at Sky-line Eco Adventures.
Also go up to the North Shore and watch the wind surfers. The waves should be pretty big up there and it's fun just to watch the locals do their thing.
We loved the road to Hana, but I know some people didn't. We stopped a ton of places and took pictures and explored. You would definitely need a car for that though.
Yes... get a rental car. The Hawaiian islands are unlike any other place in the world and you're going to want to expeience it all. You really cant fully enjoy the beauty of Maui unless you get out an explore!
I would visit Haleakala - whether you bike down or you see the sunrise - either one is fantastic to do!
I would go snorkeling at Molokini - awesome experience.
Take a short trip to IAO Needle Park and do the road to Hana - hit the best spots, especially the black sand beach. Get the Maui Revealed book - it was our bible when we were there.
Visit Lahaina for dinner, drinks and shopping. Eat at Kimo's - on Front St.
Ditto snorkeling at Molikini, amazing, and swimming with the sea turtles at Turtle Town (included in our tour with Trilogy), so cool.
Walk around old Lahaina town, lots of shops and some good restaurants including Kimo's, and try the best shave ice on the island at Ululani's.
If you're in Kihei, have breakfast at the Kihei Cafe, it's very very good!
Have a great trip
All of the above, plus the whales were amazing last Feb when I was there. We took a sunset cruise on the Scotch Mist II and one by the Pacific Whale Foundation. Both were wonderful. I loved looking out my balcony and seeing the whales swim.
Get a car. We pretty much explored the entire periphery of the Island even the parts you are not supposed to take renal cars thanks to Maui revealed. So many great things to explore.
Definitely rent a car!
If you're active/in good shape, you have to do Blue Water Rafting for their snorkeling trip. It's a motor-powered raft which zooms between snorkeling sites. We did the 5.5 hour Kanaio/Molokini tour, which was pricey, but the highlight of our trip for both DH and I. Plus, in February, you'll likely see whales on that trip as well. It's really bumpy and you have to hold on tightly, so some of the older people on our tour didn't seem to enjoy it.
Also, if you're into sushi, we had amazing sushi at Koiso. It's tiny and in this strip mall, but delicious. Those are the two things I would do again if I went back.
THIS
We're going in Feb, too and were debating renting a car the whole time or just renting from the resort the days we'd be off property. We found the resort fee (which you WILL pay) covers parking so either way we're paying.
We're doing snorkeling on Mol., considering a helicopter tour, road to Hana, sunrise at Hale., stopping at the lavender farm, and maybe whale watching - pretty much everthing that's already mentioned.
Thank you for all the advice! Unfortunately, the resort charges a resort fee of $25 a day (for the fitness center, shuttles, etc.), plus $30 if you have a car.
But oh well, it sounds like getting a car is a must. My husband and I will definitely see and do some of things suggested. Thanks again!
