What's causing this?! (dog related)

Our dane is 3 years old and has never been a shedder.  Until last week.  There is a massive amount of hair that is coming off him.  More so than our pug who is constantly shedding.

We recently changed his food to Blue which I thought was an upgrade even though we were feeding him a 4star food to begin with.  Is it possible that the food change caused this? And if it is will it stop?   It's the only thing in his life that is different from his normal routine.

  • This may not apply to you, since he's never been a shedder. But Tobey (Australian Shepherd) is molting, I swear. It's incredible. We got his hair cut down to one inch length, and H is furminating and brushing him regularly. He's on a high protein grain free food (Wellness) and has been for years. I don't know if it's the season or what. But I feel your pain. I'm so grossed out by it, and I am used to dog hair.

  • Lily is shedding like no other right now too.  There's really no point in me even vacuuming...I can't tell that I've even put a dent in it the minute she walks back through the house.  I love her, but DAMN.

Yes, molting!  That's a more accurate description!

Yeah the vacuuming is getting ridiculous.  I should just give up already but it's seriously grossing me out.

  • Blackie is bad too. I wanted to get him shaved a few weeks ago it was so bad, and I usually only reserve that for the summer. Unfortunately he got a hot spot on his leg, so we couldn't do it. But yeah... it's bad. We have black tumbleweeds drifting through our house.

Honestly, I think a lot of it is the weather. With the temperature fluctuating so much, their bodies don't know what to do.

  • I agree it is probably the weather but if it continues or he is itching or anything else out of the ordinary I would try a different variety to rule out allergies.  My dogs don't seem to be shedding any more than normal right now but I feel like my house is always covered in hair.
