Would you ask for a pay raise?

I've been training my co-worker to handle my job because I am the only one who knows how to do it, and if something were to happen (deployment, sickness) our company literally would not run for a day.

She has been with the company for 4+ years, and said that I need to ask for a raise sometime soon.

Background:

I was hired as a CSA/Sales Agent with a 36k base plus commissions and as support for the job I am in currently, 10am-6:30/7. No travel, no blackouts on when I could take off. Job was meant for someone without a degree and some sales experience.

In October, my co-worker put in his two weeks and I was the only one who knew most of his job. I was asked to take over the bulk of it and they hired someone to take over the morning part of his job (he worked 6am-7pm) and to do some of the contract work he did. I was moved from sales (no commission)/CSA to my current position. I now work 8:30am-until whenever I can get done. This is usually around 7:30. I've been asked to travel a few times, which I don't mind.

I tried to use my personal days before the end of the year, but my boss asked if I could use them in January because of some chaos that arose right before Christmas. I was perfectly fine with it because I can go home this weekend. Kicker? I have to do the main part of my job remotely. So, at 8:30am and 4pm, I'll have to be in front of a computer working for an hour or two. So, not an actual vacation. Guy before me did the same thing- he said he had only had 2 actual vacation days without working in 3 years. With training my co-worker, I could possibly have a few days without interruption, but I doubt it would go over well.

Over the holiday weekends, boss asked that I check out markets on the Monday holiday to make sure we were in line with everyone else. One of those days, I was grocery shopping and had to race home to check a few sites and our data.

Typing all of that above, I guess it does seem like time to ask, but I don't think it would be appropriate after only 3 months in my current position. DH thinks I need to wait until my year at the company in June, coworker says to ask by at least April (6 mo in current position). WWND?

Re: Would you ask for a pay raise?

  • Perhaps plant the seed with your supervisor now and discuss it seriously at 6 months.  Make mention that the job responsibilities are a little more than you anticipated and that "vacation days" are not really...  Perhaps make a little joke of it somehow to let him/her know that you think you're worth more than what you're making?  You don't want to risk upsetting your boss but it sounds like you should be making more for what you're expected to do.
  • I do not have specific advice on the pay raise question, but I will say that your personal days and vacation days are yours, you earned them and you get to use them however you see fit.  You should not be expected to work on these days and i would definitely address this with your boss, what he is asking is not only wrong but also illegal, particularly if you are non-exempt which you didnt say with this second position.  If he doesnt respect that in the future send him an email that you will be out of range and unreachable during your time off, it doesnt matter if you are taking a home vacation or in the mountains, really none of their business.
