Mirena ?

I know a lot of women have been on this.  I am wondering how is it to have it put in?  Were you sore afterwards?  Also, anybody have any nasty side effects on it?

Re: Mirena ?

  • I had Paragard, the non-hormonal IUD, for about four years. The insertion process was pretty painful, but since you have children, I highly doubt it will be as painful for you.

For example, a friend of mine with two children had Mirena inserted and went for a run later that day. After I had mine inserted, I laid on the couch with a heating pad for the rest of the day and the day after.

I loved it. It made birth control so much easier and less expensive. I plan to get it again after H and I have children.

  • I took ibuprofren before, it hurt when my cervix contracted and then maybe cramping for 30 minutes afterwards.  No side effects.  Spotted on & off for a few months.  Love it.

  • it didn't hurt putting in (a little uncomfortable). i had mine for 18 months or so but got rid of it because i didn't want any more hormones - and was having a hard time losing baby weight. gaining weight isn't a 'typical' side effect but plenty of people have experienced it with mirena.
  • I had it put it.  a little cramping, but nothing bad.  Might have taken some ibuprofen.  No side effects to speak of.  I don't ovulate normally, but I did not want to take any chances on being in the 2% that get pg after having a kid.  2 is quite enough.  I haven't had a period at all.  I think I had 2 days of super light spotting.  I had it put it about 8 wks after birth, so July I think.

  • I've had mine for almost 5 years and have to set up an appointment to have it removed within a couple of months actually.  I think I do remember them advising me to take some Ibuprofen beforehand.  There's a little cramping when they insert it, and maybe a little bit afterwards but really it's painless for the most part.  I spotted on/off for the first year, then every now and then I would have some spotting just randomly ... but it wasn't anything more than spotting (love the worry free)!

  • I had Mirena after having Maya and have it again now.  I've heard some women who haven't had children or have older children complain about the insertion, but I don't think it was any worse than a pap.  The first time I had some dizziness (it can affect your blood pressure for a short period of time) and cramping for a day both times, but nothing painful.  I had very light spotting for a few days.  No side effects.  Just awesome and cost effective birth control with no periods!  Some of my friends still have periods, but I haven't.
