s/o Complainers

This is probably going to turn into a rant, just a warning.   A good friend of mine from back in HS/college is visiting this weekend and I can already predict how many times she will say something badmouthing our hometown.    It kinda gets old after a while, and I want to smack her sometimes.

I get that she's happy to have moved far far away, and that she doesn't miss this place, but it's almost like she has to try to convince us that we should also move far away because it's a "better life".   For example, she'll say something like "I sure don't miss any of that traffic and crazy highways you have to deal with everyday!   My little town is so great there's no traffic at all!"

It's as if the place she chooses to live now has NO faults or issues at all and she likes to constantly point out how messed up she thinks Houston is (even though we have many great things happening now also).   I almost dread meeting up with her because of that but maybe she will go easy on the complaints this time.

  • I'm kind of like that, but not to that extent. I guess when I say things like that, it's to confirm that I made the right choice to leave my family and friends and the place I was raised.

    I hope it doesn't go too bad...remember, she'll be leaving after the weekend!

  • I'd probably resort to "I'm glad it works for you." over and over.. and over and over until she got annoyed hearing it.

    Yeah, I have hit up the "cost of living" difference before, that had her changing the subject.    What we pay for an average house down here is WAYYYY less than what they would pay where she lives, AND we don't have state property taxes.    Pointing out things like that helps... she doesn't even own a house b/c she can't afford it, she has to rent.    Wink

    I would probably also end up doing this. Or making a comment about how great home ownership is, and how much you enjoy not having to rent. Good luck! Hopefully she won't be too bad!

  • I'm curious, where is this place that's so much better?

    She lives in Oregon.

    I'm not going to lie, we vacationed up there the summer before last and visited her, it really was a nice town and area.   It is almost the complete opposite of Houston in many ways, but I don't need to be reminded of that since I already know it.

    But for what she pays to live there (even just renting), and how little she makes at her job...   I'll just say that I think sometimes I have it better, even though it's definitely not as pretty down here.

    Hmm, I've never been so take this with a grain of salt. Oregon does not sound appealing. I just think of Oregon trail and cholera.  Dumb, I know. Stick out tongue Maybe everyone is partial to where they lilve, but I'm such a New England-loving gal that I doubt I'd be happy anywhere else.

  • That sounds so frustrating.

    I used to have a very close friend in college (We were pledge sisters to the same sorority & lived together for a year). Anyway, we kept up the friendship for a few years after I moved from PA to FL.  She would call me regularly to complain about her life.

    ::phone rings::

    Me: Hey friend how's it going?

    Her: Let me tell you all about this BS ..... :

    :Begin Rant #1::  ::End Rant #1::

    ::Begin Rant #2:: ::End Rant #2::

    ::Begin Rant #3::

    - I cut her off with something like, "Sorry to hear that, but I have to go to work now, ttyl"

    Never did she ask how I was doing or what was going on in my life. I got so tired of being her sounding board that I stopped answering her calls & our friendship faded.

    What I'm saying is that it is no fun to be around someone who is always complaining!

  • Good luck Erin! I understand how you feel but it's a reverse situation. One of my friends in MI is always talking up her life and saying "it's not like you have to move away to be successful" which I sort of feel is a dig at me and a lot of her other friends that have moved out of the area. I think it makes her feel better about her choices but it's still really annoying.

    I hope your time with your friend goes okay.
