Mirena - talk to me

What's your experience? I'll even take friends of friends of friends' experience. Smile

Long story short: I had been on bcp for 6 years, and went off recently because I wanted the artificial hormones out of my system (lots of bad side effects). I've been having a lot of breast pain for about 3 weeks, so I went to the doc the other day. They wanted to rule out pg first, of course. So when it came back positive and I freaked, they sent me to do an ultrasound and there was nothing there. Apparently one of the new assistants got my test mixed up with someone else's. I was livid, to say the least. Anyway, after that scare, I solidified my never-ever status. I revisited the bc question and am considering the Mirena IUD.

Re: Mirena - talk to me

  • I was on bcps for 10 years, then switched to the Nuvaring for about 1.5 years and then got the Mirena in April of last year...or was it the year before?  God, I don't even remember now!

The insertion was 13 seconds of the worst pain in my ute ever, but worth it!!!!  I did end up almost passing out when they sat me up, but that is common for me because I am a big chicken when it comes to seeing blood. I only saw a little swab of my blood and I felt light headed.

I had it done on a Friday and just took it easy all weekend.  The heating pad was my bff.  They had me go when I had my period and also had me take 800mg of advil prior.

I had some sharp cramps for a little while and very light spotting for close to a month.  Jer has felt it a couple times (a long time ago), but it is perfect now!  No period, but I do get some pms symptoms.

The only weird thing in the beginning is that gas or a #2 would almost push on it and it would hurt.  That went away when it settled in.

  • OMG how scary!!!!!!!!

I love the Mirena. Seriously, I can't express my love for it. I love it, like real love and not just verbal love. LOVE IT! OK, get it? Love. yes, moving on...

Insertion: Hurt. I won't lie. I took 800mg ibuprofen 30 minutes before my appointment. She opened me up with the speculum, clamped my uterus (or cervix, now I can't remember) and began inserting the tool with the mirena. (Basically, a stick with the mirena on the end long enough to get up into the cervix.) My cervix was too small and she could not complete insertion. She had to use dialators to open me up.

Pain: The pain was a period type of cramping, but more painful and sharp. However, once it was inserted (for me it took 15 minutes. It is less for other people though) all pain subsided. She had me stay put on the table for 5 minutes so I wouldn't pass out. Good thing too b/c I almost did. The drive home was fine and the pain was only "bad" when I got up and moved around. I stayed on the couch all day/night in jammies, heating pad and an attentive husband.

Spotting: I spotted for about 2 months. VERY light. If I wanted sex, I would take a bath which stopped the bleeding long enough for sex.

Periods: I have not had one since insertion. I have not even spotted since 6 months post insertion. (And even then it was only 1 day after that first 2 months)

Conclusion: You probably won't regret it.  I wish I had known about it sooner and I, you guessed it, love it.

  • It is totally worth it!
  • I was on BCP for 10ish years with no real problems. I never forgot to take my pills, no PMS, no side effects, I'm just such a never ever ever that I didn't want any slight chance of accidental pregnancy, so I got Mirena 3 years ago. I 10000% love it. Insertion hurt, but it's NBD in the long run. I haven't had a period since the month after insertion. I'd recommend it to anyone.

  • I'm non my second Mirena and the insertion was bad the first time and just AWFUL the second time. I'm also a never-ever, so after this comes out next year (yikes), I'll have a decision to make. I'm probably going to have another one inserted and then see after that - will be 5 years older and (gasp) in my mid-forties, so maybe it will be bcp til the change. Who knows!  I'm not as fortunate as others to have no periods and no spotting, but to be spotting and only need a panty liner or light tampon at most every 4-6 weeks, I can deal - I'm totally spoiled with that.  So, I'd agree with others, insertion hurts, take it easy for the weekend (if you do it on Friday) and good luck!!
