**Hey Jellisy**

My family also spent summers in a camp on Lake Champlain!  My parents still have the camp.  It's in Vermont on the VT/NY/Quebec border.  We went to Valcour island all the time--it was about an hour in the boat and we always loved the beautiful ride down there.  So many great memories!  I wish I could provide the same type of experience for my kids.

Re: **Hey Jellisy**

  • I feel the same.  My kids are definitely going to miss out on what I really believe was one of the best childhood experiences.  It's just too far from here.  My families camp was near Plattsburgh on the NY side.  Valcour was about a half mile off the shore.  Did you ever go to watch the Governors Cup sailing races around Crab Island?  We would bike up to Clinton Community College to see it.  Lake Champlain is easily my favorite place in the US if not anywhere.  My uncle sold the camp on the lake and bought one on Lake Chauteugay which is also really lovely but it's not the same.  He still lives in Plattsburgh as do some of my cousins so I get to Lake Champlain fairly often.

Have you ever gone up in the winter?  It's cold, but amazing to see how trucks drive across the lake and campfires on the ice from where folks are ice fishing.  On the NY side, it's even more amazing to see the Ausable waterfall frozen solid.

If I could take the winters, and I can't, I would live their year round.  In my retirement dreams, we would spend the warmer months up there.

  • When I was in high school, I went up in the winter a few times, but our camp is actually pretty rustic (cold!) and the road the house is on becomes impassable with snow every winter. I did love driving on the ice and going ice fishing with my dad though.

We never did see the sailing races. The three of us kids pretty much spent all our time in the summer swimming in the crystal clear water and begging our dad to take us waterskiing. :) We also loved being up there for holidays and watching fireworks over the water.
