Secrets Maroma Beach or other? Help me decide!!

So for our annual december trip to mexico dh and i have decided to go from dec 22-jan 5 (2 weeks). the first week, dec 22 to dec 29 will be spent at our timeshare resort in cancun for christmas. the 2nd week, dec 29 to jan 5 will be spent elsewhere. herein lies my dilemma:

we stayed at the occidental grand xcaret dec 2010 and love it. we upgraded to the royal club side and loved hving a special small exclusive part of the resort so we'd like to do that again but where? I know secrets maroma beach has a VIP section but am having a tough time figuruing out just what the vip status entitles you to. at occidental there was a separate are for rooms, separate pool, restaurant, beach area etc... but still ahve run of the rest of the resort but no towel cards, no reservations etc...

so i guess what i'm asking is have you been to SM or anywhere else that hade the vip upgrade available? did you do the upgrade? what was included?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • We've been to SMB - no upgrade for us. However, the resort is AWESOME. I definitely recommend it.

  • We went to SMB in Oct 10 for our HM.  We got the upgrade/Preferred Club.  Supposedly the rooms are slightly nicer; although some guests said there was no true difference.

The other benefit is a supposedly quicker check-in (who cares really), a consierge for your building where your rooms are (he made reservations, you could do it yourself) and the Preferred Club bar (3 computers w/free iternet, bar, board games and hot appetiziers in the afternoon when the other restaurants were closed); personally, I wouldn't pay the upgrade and we've said if we go back we will save our money.

  • We did Excellence Club at Excellend Playa Mujeres last year. The main benefits that I could see were better room location (better ocean views), Excellence Club pool (meh), liquor in the room, more room service selection at all hours, private lounge with top-shelf bar, appetizers, etc., and private area with upgraded service at the beach.

Honestly, it wasn't worth the increased cost other than the better view.
