Re: What are you reading?

  • What are you reading? How is it? I finished a book at 4am today and haven't picked up another one yet.

Bonus: What have you read recently, and how was it? What are you reading next?

    • So far this year:
    • Will Grayson, Will Grayson - Young Adult - Cute, but didn't live up the excessive hype it's been given on the Nest Book Club board, at least not for me.
    • The Daughters - Young Adult - Cute, fluffy, quick read. I have the other 3 in the series on request from the library.
    • Heart of the Matter - Chick-lit - Hated it. I'm mad that I even picked it up. I'll never read another Emily Giffin novel, as this isn't the first one I've hated.

To read next: Eh, if I'm eager to read something tonight, I'll just have to grab something off the bookshelf. No idea what. I might just wait until tomorrow and pick up the Daughters books that should all be ready for me by then.

  • Just finished The Paris Wife and loved it. I plan to start The Leftovers by Tom Perotta tonight.
  • I am still reading City of Thieves by David Benioff. Embarrassed  I've been reading it since October! It's not long and it's really good actually, but I keep putting it down for various reasons. It's about Leningrad and Russia during WWII and is pretty interesting.

the last book I finished was in November (Handmaid's Tale.) I've been a reading failure lately!

    next up:

One Thousand White Women for my book club - I'm really excited about that one, but I have to get on it bc book club is next week....lol.

I have the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series ready to go as well.

For our trip to Puerto Rico in three weeks (SO excited in case you couldn't tell) I've been stockpiling books on my nook - so far:

Island of Lost Girls (which seems incredibly depressing but it was cheap...)

The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan

To Defy a King by Elizabeth Chadwick

At the risk of sounding super old, I've gotten sidetracked from reading bc I'm trying to crochet baby blankets for everyone I know having babies and just one is taking me forever haha.

  • Reading Stephen King's 11-22-63.  So far it's been amazing - easily my favorite of his in recent years.

  • Hey-can I butt in and ask you guys where you get ideas for what to read next? I have been a lifelong reader but seriously slowed down in the past two years with too much going on-I am starting to get back into it though. Do you go by bestseller lists? Just peruse the library and pick up whatever looks interesting? There are so many books out there but unfortunately some that seem like they would be good turn out to be not so good.....and I hate putting the time into reading a book that is not very good and even worse, not even finishing it.

I skim the threads on the Nest Book Club, browse the bookstore and take pictures of books that sound appealing (same at the library), and use GoodReads for recommendations.

  • I am glad someone posted this!! I have made a goal of 25 books for 2012.  I would LOVE to read 50, but I will get to that if I have time.  I just read  A Stolen Life--the memoir by Jaycee Duggard.  I thought it was nicely written by her and made me sick to hear what she went through.  It really made me want to hug DS a lot closer after reading this.  I plan on going with the Hunger Game series next.  I heard they are great.

  • Because of you FIA I am reading book 2 of the outlander series. I like it a lot but it definitely makes me go SAY WHAT??? a lot. Is the whole series good or does it become eh at some point? I am not sure how this can stretch out for 7 books especially if they are all 800+ pages.
  • Finally reading "Girl with a pearl earring". Just finished reading "Veronica". I HATED it. In fact, I've read it before, but didn't remember reading it until 1/2 through the book.

Butting in, but personally I think they get better and better!  There are so many new characters and storylines that come into play.

Same more or less - I don't get to the "real" bookstore that often but I use Amazon's recommendations, B&N's lists of bestsellers and new releases, and I use what people recommend on these boards a lot.  I also love goodreads.

I'm in a book club and that has been good too for expanding my horizons in terms of what I read.

I also just read what people lend me.  someone lent me "American Wife" by Curtis Sittenfeld and so that is on my TBR pile.  I was in an elfster exchange on another board and got an Alison Weir book I really wanted, etc.

  • I'm currently reading Someone to Save you by Paul Pilkington and it's really good. It's a murder thriller.

My next book will probably be Fools Rush In.

I get a lot my ideas from Goodreads, my kindle has a free library (which I love) and then I get ideas from these post too.

  • I'm reading the Stand by Stephen King. So far, so good, but I feel like I can't concentrate on it. I was reading Outlander, but couldn't get into it.

However, I just got a notice that The Paris Wife is ready for me to download from the library, and I"m not that far into The Stand! I hate when that happens!

I'm almost done with the first Outlander book and the 2nd one is next on my to read list. I'm kind of undecided if I really like it or not. There are some parts that I think are pushed WAY too far, but it's kept my interest so far!

  • Just finished What Alice Forgot.  LOVED it!  Really made me think about how my life has changed in the past ten years.

Started Twenties Girl.  I'm also finishing listening to Catching Fire.

I get lots of recommendations and ideas from GoodReads.  I'm also in a book club and that has definitely broadened my horizons.

I have to agree with my girl here.

Gabaldon is so incredible at character development and creative storylines that I feel like she's kept me engaged the entire time. Sure, some storylines are more interesting to me than others, but overall, I think the series has just gotten better as it goes along. You wouldn't think it's possible to write THAT MUCH and keep it exciting, but she manages.

  • I am in a horrible reading slump. This is the first time in my entire reading life that I don't have a book (or 6) on hand and really don't care. It is a terrible feeling though.

  • I'm reading Midwives by Chris Bohjalian. It's really good! Kind of reminds me of a Jodi Picoult book.

I just finished The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry. It was good but kind of weird.

Next up is finishing The Patron Saint of Liars (which I started months ago!). Not sure what I will read after that...

I get my book ideas from all over-threads like this, friend/family recs, articles in magazines/newspapers. I also browse Amazon a lot. They have all kinds of lists (some organized by year) and it's easy to read what the books about on there too.

  • I just finished The Girl Who Played With Fire and now I can't wait to read the final book in the series.  I plan to start The Hunger Games series next.

I get a lot of book ideas just reading these threads. I wish there was an app on Facebook that would let you share what you are currently reading, I knew there used to be some in the past but they seem to have fallen by the wayside.
