can you drive a stick shift?

I took my car in for some work this weekend and the mechanic seemed impressed that I (a girl) was driving a stick. He also joked with me about ending up stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and I made sure to let him know that I can change my own tire thankyouverymuch.

I learned to drive a stick basically around the same time I bought this car. But I think it was important for me to learn regardless because DH's car is a stick and it's good that I'm able to drive it when needed.

Re: can you drive a stick shift?

  • Nope. Never had the need.

  • No. My ex tried to teach me and I thought I was getting it, so when he needed to move his car, I volunteered. I ran his car right into mine. Haven't touched a stick since.

  • Yep.  My first car was a stick.

  • lol, Sikes -- don't the brakes still work the same?? ;)

I started learning on DH's last car, but we weren't exactly going about it with any urgency. Once or twice when we were coming home from somewhere with nothing to do, we'd pull in a parking lot and I'd start it and put it in gear. That's about as far as we got, and then his car bit the big one. He always said he'd never drive an automatic, but since he had a sort of pressing need and they didn't have any manual accords in stock, he got an automatic. And thus endeth my learning how to drive stick. And a far-too-long answer to this question.

  • I can if it is a dire emergency but I really suck at it.

  • Yes. My first car was a 1989 Honda Civic that I learned to drive on and it was stick. :)

  • I don't and it seriously irks me. That is a big no-no for my zombie apocalypse/horror movie survival plan. I need to rectify this.

  • No, but I'm attempting to learn. H's car is a stick so he's been slowly teaching me.

  • DH "taught" me in an empty parking lot back when he had his Cobra.  I've got it and feel I could drive one in an emergency.  But, I have no desire to just drive one every day.

  • I learned way back in the day in drivers ed, but I'm sure it would take a refresher for me to be able to do it now.

  • Yes. That is all my parents own so I learned how to drive on a stick shift. It was not fun. Up until my current car that is all I have owned.

  • My first vehicle was a manual SUV, that thing was a beast. I actually miss it.
  • Yes, but it has been a few years. It is like riding a bicycle, the more you do it, the better you are at it. I would not want to drive a stick every day.

  • My entire life was cars from like 16 until marriage...modded and raced them. Haven't driven stick for a while but I do miss it.

  • I can, but I haven't in a long time.  If I needed to I could, which is all I care about.
  • No.  I had a friend try to teach me in high school and I think another friend tried to teach me soon after college but I never caught on.  DH used to have a stick shift, but has an automatic now, so I hope I don't ever find myself in a situation where I need to drive a stick.

  • My dad taught me how when I was 16 because his truck was a stick and he thought I needed to know how to drive it.. that was 14 years ago though.. so probably not :)
