s/o Washington DC w a toddler

I am planning a long weekend trip to DC at the end of May. Please recommend some great things to see, specifically with a toddler. So far I am thinking the zoo and the Air and Space museum (she is obsessed with things that fly). We will probably do a hop on hop off bus tour as well to try to get in a little bit of everything (thoughts?). DH and I have both been before, so we are ok with spending quality time at a few spots instead of trying to see everything.

Also, what is transportation like around the city to get to the different attractions?  Carseat needed? Public?

Open to all ideas :)

  • The animal displays at Natural History are so cool.  Giant whale, elephant, lots of other animals.

The Smithsonians are walkable to each other.   The zoo is tough since it's at the top of a hill from the nearest Metro station. (Or down hill from one a bit further.)

    Second the Natural History

We've always just walked from the metro to the zoo - if you have a stroller for her, it is a longer walk.

She might like the Butterfly Garden outside vs the  butterfly pavilion that charges inside the museum.

Not sure if she'd like an of the 3-D i-max movies - they are shorter than feature length movies.

Metro makes it easy to get around downtown you don't need a carseat.  If you go out to the other half of the Air & Space at Dulles you'll probably need one.

    Hi:

We live in Pittsburgh, but my best friend lives in Northern Virginia, so we spend a lot of time in DC.  I have two boys, a 2 year old and a 4 year old.  Take a stroller and take the metro. It is really easy to get around.  Will you have a car?  If so the Udvar Hazy Museum at Dulles is a must if your child likes things that fly.  A huge hanger with a gazillion things to see, a small plane you can sit in and you can go up to an observaton deck and watch planes land (just about every minute).  My two year old would spend hours on the observation deck if we let him.  He also likes the transportation exhibit at the American History Museum and, of course, the dinosaurs in the natural history museum.  The 4 year old, however, "perfers our own dinosaurs (at the Carnegie Museum)."  the zoo is also fun.  My 2 year old likes to run on the mall and walk on all the raised curbs, so just walking around the mall and seeing the monuments and fountains is always fun as well.  Have a great trip!

  • Definitely the Zoo and Natural History Museum. Check out http://kidfriendlydc.com/, it has great stuff for kids (Sorry it isn't clicky)

  • Zoo's great.

Instead of a hop-on-hop-off, you might be interested in the DC Ducks (they pick up at Union Station and drive "into" the river, which could be fun for your LO.
