Re: pet bunny

  • I don't have one, but I want one...desperately.  Although we already have too many animals in our condo, I was secretly hoping James would get me one for Christmas.

  • I had one! His name was Gumps - after Forrest Gump because when he was adopted by my friend he was sitting off to one side of the cage alone.

He had free roam of the house. He did not use a litter box, but had a hutch setup that had a tray under it that slid out and you would put woodchip type stuff in there and the poo, etc. fell in there. It was very easy cleaning.

He got along with our 3 cats and our turtle. I miss him.

  • Yikes. Bunnies.

Yep, they're cute at first glance, with their soft furry ears and blank stares. If you get lucky and find a docile bunny, they're good snugglers. My mom has had a couple. But they are stinky and cause lots of work.

In theory, it's *possible* to litter box train them. Their poop is just tiny little pellets (my dad called them cocoa puffs, thus ruining cocoa puffs for me forever), but their pee, holy moley does it ever reek. Even with odor blocking litter. I'm gagging just thinking about it. Our first bunny was more or less trained, but when we let her roam the house she'd leave nasty surprises in all kinds of random places.

They're a little bipolar too. Our bunnies both had sweet temperaments, but when they have to go poop, they just bite you. They have crazy sharp teeth and require special toys to chew to keep their teeth from growing too long. And don't get me started on how much fun it is to try to clip their toenails.

Aside from the stink, they're fairly entertaining to watch when you let them loose to run around. They have to be spayed/neutered like any other pet, or they can get cancer if they don't reproduce. They're cute, and furry, and snuggly, but they are pretty high maintenance. Sorry to be Debbie Downer :( My mom loved her bunnies, but I think she's decided against getting another one.

  • My sister had a pet bunny.  He was pretty cute.  Turns out i'm allergic to bunnies, though... He did have a stinky box, but it wasn't worse than a cat box (maybe depends on breed, food, etc.).  He lived in a hutch, but was let out to run around the house pretty often and never made a mess on the floor.  He wasn't my rabbit, so i only did it a couple times, but cleaning the hutch is not fun (like a bird cage).

  • we had several growing up, but they were kept outside in hutches (above ground so they were safe) and then we would play with them in the yard or bring them inside to play.  Even in the yard they rarely went to the bathroom, almost like they didn't want to unless they were back in their cage.  My mom used the poop for her compost, it makes great fertilizer!
  • My sister has one, it's litter trained. If you have any specific questions, I'll ask her.

  • you guys aren't doing a good job convinving me to get a bunny haha!

pv- how long does litter training take? is it automatic (like cats) or does it take work? special bunny litter? does it cuddle in bed?

  • I want a bunny! DH says no though. : (

He grew up having bunnies as pets and they smell. Or at least their cages do. I want a bunny though! They are so cute and soft! And they make adorable twitchy nose faces..

I have heard they can be litter trained. I think my friend did that with her bunny.

    Edit: added more.

  • My first college roommate's family had a pet rabbit named Shakespeare that they called Shakey. (Now, they aren't literary and she doesn't LIKE Shakespeare plays but just the name <roll eyes>) Any way, he was litter-box trained and had his own bedroom that was actually larger than my friend's. The family loved that bunny!

  • jenn, here is what she said:

Litter training shouldn't take long. I would leave the bunny in the cage with the litter box a couple days and then he should should be good to go. If the rabbit is let out ( which it should a few hours a day) it should has access to go in and out of the cage so no accidents happen. And our rabbit doesn't cuddle in bed, but he is a Netherland Dwarf and they aren't the cuddle type. BUT! he is super smart. I'm super that depends on the rabbit as well.. Hope that helps.

  • also, bunny poops are not like dog/cat poop, more like other rodent poop.  it's a round pellet so much easier to pick up in case there was an accident during the 'training' time.
  • haha thank you ladies so much for indulging my curiosity. i realize i could've just googled all this info, but i was just having a wandering mind and wondering what it would be like to have a pet bunny haha.you are all wonderful.

    maybe one day.
