Me and my soon to be H will be moving to the Denver area in 6-8 months. I'm going next month to check out some neighborhoods. We'll be newlyweds, so we'd like somewhere that's relatively family friendly, but still with tons of things to do. I'm kind of spoiled out here in the suburbs of Orange County, so I'd really like a nicer area where I'll feel safe when he is out of town (which will be often.) I've heard the old town area of Fort Collins is nice? We're pretty flexible with areas because they fly him out all the time, but we need to be in the state of Colorado.
I also have a rather successful hair and makeup business (for weddings) I've grown out here for 5 years. I'm super bummed to have to start over, but I'm hoping to transition it over there as well.
We have 2 little dogs, so I'd prefer more of a townhouse/condo/small house. We'd like 2-3 bedrooms (2 preferably) and prefer to cap it around $1500.
If you could help by telling me some nicer parts of town to check out, where to avoid, anything else helpful-- I would totally appreciate it!
BTW, I plan on sticking around to get to know you girls! I have a handful of close friends that I met on the OC knot/nest back when I got married (yeah, about that..) and hope to continue the trend onto here. Thanks girls!
Re: Hi Ladies! Need moving help.
Thanks for the info!
I actually grew up in Mission Viejo, so I totally know what you mean by the Shea home quality. I'll check it out for sure.
I went to college in Fort Collins (and stuck around for a few years after graduating too) and loved it! Old Town is going to be a little annoying, filled with college kids, but there's a lot to do and it's cute. The south side of town is growing quite a bit and they've put in lots of stores and restaurants so don't rule it out (East of College Ave, South of Harmony area). Old Town is going to be all old homes, south side will be relatively new (some brand new too) if that matters to you at all. The town is very dog friendly and you can bike pretty much everywhere which I love. Drawback for you, as I see it, is that it's about an hour to the airport on I-25 which is one of the most dangerous highways in the nation : ( I wouldn't want to make that drive regularly... that said, DH commuted 4-7 times/week from Fort Collins all the way down to the tech center for 6 months before we moved... people do it.
Another cool area that's much closer to the airport is Stapleton. Lots of new construction (and some that's a few years old too) and lots to do. They have tons of families with great parks for walking and playing. Fun local and chain stores and restaurants. Close to the major highways too which makes it convenient for driving anywhere. About 20 minutes to Downtown Denver. Stapleton has no nightlife though, if that matters to you, you'd have to drive into the Denver area.
I lived near Cheesman park for a while and loved the charm of it! Some families, lots of gays (it's the most friendly and accepting neighborhood in the State, I bet), and tons of dog people! Older properties (there are a few historic districts there) and very close to downtown (you can walk to Dazzle where they have some of the best jazz you can find).
I've lived all over so PM me if you want more info on any specific area!
Well, Ft Collins isn't in the Denver area, unfortunately.
In the metro area, I'd recommend, the areas south of I-25 & I-225 along the I-25 corridor as well as into the Highlands Ranch or Parker area.
You'd probably also like the Olde Town Arvada area. There are some townhomes near the water tower that are pretty cute, but I'm not sure about that price range. Have you checked Craig's List?
Presuming you need to be near or relatively close to the airport (say 30-45 minute drive) so I would look in HR, Centennial, Parker, Littleton and Stapleton. Most of Denver is relatively safe. I think you can get what you are looking for in that price point around here. FWIW, DH and I also relocated from So Cal and live in HR and love it.

I got married in Mission Viejo, on the patio at Tortilla Flats Restaurant. Ah, the memories!
OP, I think that you'll love Denver, and like PP says there are several neighborhoods that have a similar feel to what you are familiar with in South OC. I lived in Irvine before we moved to Denver, and Stapleton and some parts of Lowry might be a good fit for newer homes that are part of planned communities, but close to downtown Denver. Both, especially Stapleton, are pretty family friendly. It just depends on where you end up working and how tolerable you are to a commute.
I have what is considered a longish commute, but nothing like hitting the 405 at 5pm on a Friday, I assure you.
Welcome!
Hey, I remember you back from the knot way back when. We just moved back from Colorado to Cali but have been in your shoes completely. What I wanted to say though is that this is a great board, very active with really great women on it. There are lots of great areas to look in depending on what you want. You need to come and decide where you will live. If your H will by flying a lot, I would live in the greater Denver area. There are all sorts of fun and cool neighborhoods to live in, new and old. It will really depend on your lifestyle.
Anyway, I'm back in Cali but still like to hang out on this board because it is exceptional and can be a great resource.
I just noticed that we joined the knot at roughly the same time, and I used to lurk on the OC boards when I was planning until they completely died. I knew one frequent poster to that board IRL, but lost touch with her once she moved to Lithuania. If you know her too, I think you'll know what that means...
Welcome.
This is a cute little interactive map that shows the names and locations (and a small description) of each neighborhood. I used to live just west of Denver near Highlands/Berkely/Sloan's Lake/Sunnyside/LoHi (all names for small parts of a larger west of downtown area) and really liked that area, it's hip and fun and has a lot of cute bungalows, is a short drive to the airport, but easy access to go west to the mtns, but it's not quite as "safe" as the suburbs.
I also lived in Golden for awhile and it's got a much smaller-town feel and is really cute also.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
Was this always your name?? Sasinka
moved back to OC and had a baby!
The nest board is so dead. We all talk on twitter/gchat now!
BTW, I've been to the Tortilla Flats on Mission Viejo Lake many, many times! Small world.
Thanks for the link! What a great interactive map.
Thanks for all the info girls-- you are so helpful.
Yup, I just was a pretty infrequent poster once they flipped me to the Nest. Sasinka and I worked together for a dying company before she left to move and I moved here. If you talk to her anytime soon, tell her Erika from GTW says hi!
I miss TF! Their mexican sweet breads are a-mazing. Not to mention the margaritas!
Keep us posted on how your move plans come along. There are lots of women on this board that live all over the metro area, and are so helpful if you have questions or need recs.
That would be so fantastic! I'll be taking you up on that offer.
