Heh heh... Thank you, Bus!

Things that were awesome today:

1) A night shift RN tried to throw me under the bus when it came to light that she had screwed up her paper charting/flowsheet.... but then that bus slammed on the breaks, flipped her out through the windshield and ran over her instead when I pointed out that she had messed up elsewhere that proved it had nothing to do with me at all.

Ahhhhh, I wish I had had a camera because it was a Kodak moment. And I'm guessing she will not try that again-- at least not for a while.

2) The annoying trauma surgeon (well, one of them) transferred one of my patients just in time for me not to lose my mind (seriously, she would not stop asking for a thickened Diet Coke when I kept explaining to her that if she could just wait 5 minutes while I hung her life-saving Potassium replacement first-- and that was her least frustrating request).

3) MH had cleared the driveway today and is taking me out to dinner because my day was so sucky.

4) Excedrin got rid of the headache I had all day in 20 minutes.

Re: Heh heh... Thank you, Bus!

  • What the heck is a thickened Diet Coke?
  • Yay for #3 and #4!

Daniele, you work in the ER, right?  I was there Saturday night and asked after you but the intake nurse lady didn't know you. Or maybe she did and was trying to cover it up so she could blame something on you. :P

  • Ugh.  I'm glad your day ended with some good things!  I'm totally perplexed by this thickened Diet Coke.  Thickened soda?  Huh?
  • @ MeganInMaine-- I work in the ICU. So when people go to the ER and are not out of the woods yet, they come to me. So I'm down there for traumas and such (if I'm the on-call RN) but otherwise, I'm up in the ICU almost exclusively.

@ Jen and Andrea-- thickened Diet Coke is basically Diet Coke with thickener added (i.e. Corn Starch) for people who have difficulty swallowing. Often, people who are on a ventilator for a prolonged period of time have trouble swallowing thin liquids or chunky foods without risking it going down the wrong pipe into their lungs. Any time that happens, people end up risking pneumonia (or choking of course) and we can't have that in people who are already fighting off other infections/wounds/etc. Hence the thickened Diet Coke. There are different degrees of thickened (nectar, honey, pudding, etc.) so we have to mix the stuff ourselves. This woman spent every 10-15 mins calling me in to her room or sending her daughter out to find someone to ask if she could start eating food or drinking Diet Coke-- for 36 hours until the Speech Therapist came to do the swallow study on her. Then, she started on the thickener once she was cleared-- despite the fact that I had to hang a new bag of Potassium (serious business-- you don't want me screwing up the rate), take out a Central IV line that goes into the vein that dumps blood directly into the right atrium of the heart (also not something you want me to screw up!), and put in a new peripheral IV. Seriously. To top it off, once I DID get her her freaking thickener, she complained that the soda wasn't cold enough and wanted ice-- which she can't have...

By the way-- thickened stuff is disgusting. It tastes like corn starch in water. No matter what you put it in. I'd rather just eat applesauce and pudding.

  • Ah!  Thank you!  I couldn't figure out if it was a special coke product or the coke was thickened for medical needs.
