On a whim I decided to look up a crochet for beginners video on youtube. I thought it looked pretty easy, so I decided to try it. I'm really enjoying it! Even just doing a simple single stitch makes a way more interesting pattern than knitting.
Obviously I know it's going to take lots of practice, but does anyone have any tips for keeping things even? I know it's got to do with how tight you pull the yarn, but I didn't know if there were any tips or tricks you could give me. I also seem to have problems dropping stitches at the ends of the row. I know you're supposed to count, but I can't keep track of it to save my life. So I've figured out that if I do one more stitch than what it looks like I'm supposed to do, it seems to work out.
Tell me your learning to crochet success stories and what you're able to make now! My end goal is to be able to crochet blankets (at least baby ones!), and while that's a looooooooooong way away, I'm bound and determined to do it!
Re: Crochet Friends
Well, ok, but only if y'all are really interested in seeing a lumpy, uneven, ugly purple colored 'scarf'.
How much is involved in making a blanket? Other than a sh!t ton of time. And yarn.
And I hope I don't go blind from this. I've been doing it for 2 hours now. Probably should stop because my eyes are starting to hurt. BUT IT'S SO ADDICTING.
I have found crochet to be more difficult for me than knitting when it comes to bigger projects, but you are right that you can do much cooler stiches with crochet. From what I've experienced, the only good way to learn tention control is through practice.
I think if you want to do a blanket you should look up granny square patterns. There are literally hundreds of different designs in all skill levels and you don't have to worry so much about staying consistant. The squares are meant to be different. When you have a bunch of finished squares you stitch them together with yarn and ta-da! super cute, vintage-y blanket.
beanie type hats are fairly easy as well.
What you're doing to prevent the dropped end stich is how I have done ti when I was crocheting on the regular. It was actually a tip given to me by the lady who first showed me how to crochet.

Who knew I was ahead of the game on the dropped stitch prevention!
And I've thought a lot about piecing a quilt together. Seems like more fun and probably a bit less stressful.
Thanks ladies!
I agree with Bekkah, the only way to get the stitches the same size is to practice practice practice. My mom is incredible at crocheting and makes everything perfect while watching TV, talking, basting a turkey (ok maybe not that)! She is my "go to" for questions/help.
These are really fun to make and much more appropriate for my attention span.I put a clip on them for little girl hair thingys. You could use them as button covers, embellishments, but a good way to practice stitches. (It uses triple stitch)
