Quick advice: Best store bought pizza dough/pizza sauce?

Tonight was going to be a take-out pizza night but I left work early (hurray!) so I'm still in the mood for pizza but could go to Giant and get pizza fixins' instead... hmmm... any suggestions?  Going to head out in a few... I've never made pizza at home!  Embarrassed

Re: Quick advice: Best store bought pizza dough/pizza sauce?

  • I usually just buy pasta sauce.  I like the kinds with veggies, or we also really like to get lite Alfredo and make white pizza.  We usually use zucchini and mushrooms, but broccoli or spinach would be good too.

  • I always get the Giant brand that you find in the case by the fresh pasta, cheese, etc.  I never actually have seen any other brand at my Giant....

    I usually top with Giant sauce from the same case, mozz, feta, kalamata olives, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil.  So yummy!

  • I use Trader Joe's herbed whole wheat crust (if you can make another stop, highly recommend).

  • I usually just use my own sauce, but if I have to buy it, I like Don Pepino.  It comes in a can, it's yellow.

    For dough, I used to buy Landolfi's i think it's called.  It's in the freezer section, it comes with 2 dough balls and it's in a green package.  My Safeway stopped carrying it though Sad

    Otherwise - Wegman's is second best.  I'm not a fan of Trader Joe's pizza dough.  I"m not sure what brand Giant carries, never looked.

    I'm not good with yeast, so mine never looks like it does in the picture - but this dough is really freaking easy, if you want to make it yourself.

  • The "whack-a-tube" dough (Pillsbury, like cinnamon rolls and biscuits) is pretty good.  I'm a pizza snob and it's fine with me.

    For sauce, I make my own out of pantry staples.  So easy!

    * 1/2 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

    * 1/4 cup warm water

    * 1 tablespoon  grated Parmesan cheese

    * 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

    * 1 tablespoon honey

    * 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

    * 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano

    * 1/8 teaspoon dried basil

    * 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

    * 1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes

    * salt to taste

    In a small bowl, combine tomato paste, water, Parmesan cheese, garlic, honey,  onion powder, oregano, basil, ground black pepper, red pepper flakes and salt; mix together, breaking up any clumps of cheese.

    Sauce should sit for 30 minutes to blend flavors; spread over pizza dough and prepare pizza as desired.

    We use this dough too, but for pepperoni rolls. I highly recommend it! We buy ours at Safeway- not sure if Giant has it, since we've never checked. We also have never made homemade pizza. I would like to try it out sometime, except we like totally different toppings. We'd have to either half the pizza or do our own.

  • We just used Whole Foods' crust for the first time - available in the prepared foods section. It was AWESOME. I've always loved the TJ's ones, but this was way better. Highly recommend!
  • artslvr - Giant dough is pretty good, but the dough at the Bloom (whole wheat even) is superior.  We live ours topped with turkey pepperoni, Parmesan, mozzarella cheese and whatever spaghetti sauce we have around - homemade or jarred.  If ti's jarred, I usually add ground oregano, that makes it taste more like NJ pizza to me.
  • We like Williams-Sonoma's Parmesan Pizza Crust Mix and usually have a box on hand. It's just add water, and takes about 30 minutes to rise (usually when I gather the other ingredients). It's nice because we only use 1 of the 2 packages at a time, so the other can stay in the pantry.
