Does your DH do this? (And Niq, do you do this to your W?)

So, I was making dinner last night, and slicing up some carrots for fried rice. I was using our new Shun slicer, because it's awesome. It may have been a bit too much for the job, but I wanted to use it. Well, it slipped out of my hand, and as it fell to the floor, it cut my thumb. Not badly, but I bled a significant amount, and it wasn't fun, and it's kinda painful.

Anyway, DH calls while at the store, and I mention that I cut myself. He asks if I'm okay, I say yes, and he sighs either in exasperation or relief, I can't tell. We finish our conversation and we hang up.

He comes home, and I'm expecting him to be sympathetic (you know, "poor baby, let me see, here, let me kiss it," etc.) Instead, he goes into a full-blown lecture about how that knife isn't for chopping vegetables, but for slicing meats and stuff. I tell him how I already felt dumb enough, I don't need him to tell me that I was using the wrong knife - I need him to kiss it better and give me a hug. So he kisses it, and hugs me half-heartedly. Then goes on for another 5 minutes about knife usage.

Really, DH? Come on. You better not do this when M starts hurting herself.

ETA: I do realize this makes me sound whiny, but I just wanted a little sympathy! LOL

  • H doesn't lecture me but he isn't that sympathetic. When I am sick, I always just want him to baby me but he doesn't.. I don't hold it against him though, I've always known. And I really do need to suck it up, because I'm a whiner.

On the other hand, I dno't have children, but I do know that if my husband isn't sympathetic to our children when they hurt themselves, that is something I'll argue about!

I'm sorry you cut yourself!!! I hope it heals quickly and stops hurting!

    this!

  • James would make sure I was okay AND lecture me probably.  He's more sympathetic if he is there when I get hurt.

I hope your cut feels better.

  • there would definitely be no sympathy from my h--and even if i asked him to kiss it, he would just lecture me more about how that's not going to change anything, or that crying doesn't help.... and lots and lots of lectures.

hope your owie feels better soon.

  • DH would probably laugh at me and tease me about wanting to use a fancing knife and being clumsy and cutting myself.  Then he'd try to hug and kiss me and I'd pissed off about the teasing and say, "Get away from me, fuckface."

If DH cut himself, I would probably lecture him Embarrassed and then make sure his found was washed and bandaged up.  Actually, probably the other way around: I'd bandage it up and make sure he was OK, then lecture him.

  • You should say to him, "Stop lecturing me, fuckface!  Gimma a freaking hug!"

  • I think I sympathize first, lecture later, but I do lecture at least sometimes, but more about computer things than kitchen things.

  • neither of us lecture the other about things for the most part - if anything I do it and I try my best not to!
  • My H would give sympathy. He doesn't lecture me. He would just give me a 'be more careful' and that's it. And as for your H saying it's the wrong knife for the job, I disagree. As my hubz says, use the knife you're most comfortable with. And since you admit you wanted to try out your new Shun, which is actually the knife collection H and I have, I say you had the right knife for the job. You may not use it for that purpose again, but you tried it out. I say you were just fine! Hope your cut gets better!! Every chef gets bitten by their new knives one in a while. ;)
  • Injure myself too much to get any sympathy from DH. I would most likely get a lecture too!

  • He wouldn't lecture, but he wouldn't be sympathetic either. And do you really need dh to make a big deal out of it if it wasn't that bad? My dh would only want to see if it I thought it might need stitches or something.

  • I guess my H is the anomaly here then. He'd be concerned, wanna kiss it and make it better, and IF he lectured, it would be 1-2 sentences tops and more about how he wish I could be more careful since he doesn't like it when I hurt myself. (LOL, as if I like it when I hurt MYself!)

Haha, my DH is like this, too. Sometimes he can be too sympathetic! (Hint: If I'm irritated with myself and angry about it, it is not the best time for 'aww, poor baby', hahaha)

... :X I'm more likely to do the lecturing. Of course, I always make sure he was all bandaged up and kiss it, but he would get the, "Please be more careful; don't hurt you" lecture. Again.

  • I might be in the minority here.....

DH wouldn't really be sympathetic, but I also wouldn't expect him to be (unless I cut myself badly enough to need stitches or something).  I think he'd care...but I don't think I would make a big deal out of it myself.
