Crocheting - weaving in ends?

I've seen this referred to on patterns (I never used to follow patterns, just made straight scarves) and was wondering what the best way to do this is so they don't work their way out? I am starting a blanket that will be big chunky stripes, and I am using two strands of yarn at a time so it's nice and thick. I'm just worried when it's done it won't look really finished if there are ends hanging out.

I use a big eyed needle (that you can thread the yarn thru) and use it to hide the yarn ends in the item crocheted.
In a pinch you can use your hook to hide the ends. But the needle works better.
The big needles are usually called tapestry needles and they have huge eyes. They don't need to be super sharp though.
My plan of attack is usually to see which direction the work stretches in where my ends are. I then try to weave in the ends in the least stretchy direction of the weave (for lack of a better word) trying to cut through the middle of any post stitches or running along the tops of the stitches. I generally double back once and I don't run two ends of yarn down the same route to reduce bulkiness.
I'm really not sure if any of that made sense.
