camping-- a.bartholomew

We have taken T 4 or 5 times since she was little.  The first time, she was 3 months old.  She was awesome.  We went to KI with some friends, just overnight, but she slept great.  We hiked Gulf Hagus (into Screwauger falls) and back out, I just put her in my ergo on the front.  I took a bottle and an extra diaper with me.  No big deal at all.

Second time, she was 5 months old and we went to Stephen Phillips Memorial campground in Rangeley.  I don't recommend this place.  The sites are fantastic, but you have to hike in and carry all your stuff. That's the unfun part (and I'm a super pack rat! lol).  I brought her bouncy chair and she slept.  We ended up leaving the next day since the weather was so miserable.

We have taken her a couple times in 2011 (including once to Baxter) and she loves it.  She likes seeing the animals and she falls asleep in my Ergo when I hike.  I got a new Sherpani framed carrier and she fell asleep in that too (geez, sounds like my kid is a narcoleptic! haha)

Overall, I think its not any harder to go camping with her.  We also have a dog we bring.  We use disposables while camping (usually) and I bring her PNP.  It fits great in the tent next to our air mattress.  I don't feel like we have to bring any extra stuff for her (that we wouldnt have to bring on an overnight somewhere else).

Oh, now that I mention it.  Another FANTASTIC camping spot is Kathadin Ironworks.  You pay like $6 a night (when the gate is open, when it's closed you just drive right in and its free).  It is backwoods camping, there is no running water but everyone is friendly.  Then you can spend the day hiking Gulf Hagus (which is like a 6 hour hike) and come back to camp.  I can't wait to do that this summer :)

  • Wow, that's great you had such success!  Our biggest issue is the sleeping.  She won't go to sleep without crying and I get very paranoid about being too nosy to our neighbors so I get really stressed out.

The first time we went, she was about 7 months and it was so hot and it POURED one night and she wouldn't sleep and just cried and cried.

The second time we went, she was just a year old and it was on the top of a mountain and the wind was ridiculous.  It kept waking her up and she would just cry and cry. :(

I doubt we will try again this summer because of my finishing and the move and when we finally get up there, it will probably be too cold once we get settled so I think we will miss out on this camping season.

Do you still hike with her in your ergo?  Our carrier is a front facing carrier and I think she is too big at this point.  We may need to invest in something more sturdy.

  • I bought this carrier around labor day.

I really like it.  Lots of space for gear and I like the 5 pt harness.  I've fallen with her on my back and it held her in great.  Prior to that, I was using the Ergo (on my back) and she was good in that.  I just didnt have space for gear (like water bottles and extra diapers) and I felt like her little legs were just dangling there.

As far as fall camping goes, it really depends on the weather.  This fall was a bit warmer than usual.  We ended up going to KI one of the last weekends in October this year.  I just bundle her up though.  Lots of sweaters, hats, mittens/gloves, and jackets.  For sleep I put her in a fleece pj from Carter's and she slept with mittens and a hat on (which I just picked up from Kohl's).  She slept with me on the air mattress in my sleeping bags, so she was plenty warm.

For this coming summer though, I think I'm going to get her the kids air mattress from LLBean and her own sleeping bag.

T has always been such a laid back kid, which really helps.  You just need to figure out what makes LO the most comfortable and run with it.  Unfortunately that means trial and error; and means some trips are a total flop! :)

How much time do you spend outdoors in the woods with her (I dont mean to imply you never take LO outside)?  Maybe do a bunch of day hikes and then an overnight or two in a tent before doing a full fledged trip.  Maybe during the summer at home, camp out in the tent in your backyard to get her used to it.
