Must do/see in Buenos Aires/Mendoza
DH and I are going to Mendoza and Buenos Aires at the end of the month. We will be spending 4 nights in Mendoza and 3 in Buenos Aires. In Mendoza we are staying near Plaza de la Independencia and in Buenos Aires in Palermo.
In Mendoza we are interested in drinking lots of wine
...not sure what is the best way to get to/from the wineries? I thought about a tour, but I don't want to be restricted to a time table and wineries. We also thought about a cooking class, but it is $125 USD per person and we thought that was a little steep.
Buenos Aires we don't have any real plans.
Re: Must do/see in Buenos Aires/Mendoza
I'm pretty sure you can rent bikes and bike out to the wineries if you're feeling brave enough to bike while drunk...not sure of a specific company name, but your hotel should be able to give you info.
For Buenos Aires, we did a great walking tour which is led by a British expat and is a good intro to the city (http://www.emilyinchile.com/2011/05/getting-to-know-buenos-aires/). I'd do that on day 1 and then based on what interests you plan the rest of your days. If you're there on a Sunday, the San Telmo market is fun (http://www.emilyinchile.com/2011/05/sunday-in-san-telmo/), and Caminito is the touristy area in the La Boca neighborhood which can make for a good way to spend a couple of hours (http://www.emilyinchile.com/2011/05/a-morning-in-la-boca-and-a-buenos-aires-wedding/). In terms of restaurants, we LOVED Caf? San Juan in San Telmo, and a friend who used to live in BsAs says Cabrera - there are two, both in Palermo - is the best steak at good prices.

We booked a private driver (which was very helpful as our Spanish is terrible and many places required a reservation, and at 2, the staff didn't speak English). We used Javier from Plaza Italia B&B. I think it was like $200 but we were able to tell him our wine preferances and he took us to places based on that. We visited 5 wineries in one day and it was nice not to have to drive. I highly recommend dinner at Azafran. There is also a tasting room in the city...wines of Mendoza I think.
We also went horseback riding one day, which was fun, but I'd actually recommend doing a day at Estancia los Dos Hermanos out of Buenos Aires instead. They picked us up and we had a 2 hour ride, a huge lunch with tons of meat and wine, and then another 2 hour ride; I think the whole day was $200. We also did the cooking class in BA with Cooking with Teresita and that was was worth the cost. And we spent one day in Colonia, Uruguay (took the ferry over).
We do already have reservations at Azafran along with Francesco Barbera's, Florentino Bistro and Anna's Bistro.
We only went for two days, but here are some pics.
