Wrote an article for newpapers-exclusivity question!!!!!!!!!

I have just started emailing my work to papers. I have had a good response.

I emailed an article to three local papers, and one emailed back and asked if I had only sent it to them. Just wondering why? I am not in the newspaper business, and hope I didn't make a big mistake. I have not responded, as I was looking for advice.

Re: Wrote an article for newpapers-exclusivity question!!!!!!!!!

  • If the newspapers are in the same area, they may view each other as competition. Therefore, if you write stories for one of them, that paper may have a policy that says you can't write for others they compete with.
  • Should I only submit one article to one paper at a time? Some of them NEVER write back, while others are in better contact with me. I have never had the same story published in multiple papers, as the editors have always replied to my email telling me they were going to print it( if they chose to publish).

Thanks for the repsonse! I just don't want to make an editor mad!

  • It would be a really good idea for you to pick up the 2012 edition of the Writer's Market and start acquainting yourself with issues like this before you run into trouble.

  • Based on what you wrote, I'm guessing you're looking for freelance work. I work at a newspaper full-time at the moment, but I've done some freelance in the past.

In my freelance situations, I was never submitting stories on my own to various publications. I basically had a working relationship with editors who would call me and say, "Can you write a story about A and B?" Then I was free to say yes or no, depending on how much time I had available.

If you're submitting work before you talk to an editor, then I guess that's a different story. Either way, though, if a publication agrees to publish your story and then would see the same story (by you) in a competing publication, they would frown on that. Once you become a regular freelancer, a lot of publications will ask you to sign a freelance agreement of some sort. This would cover the issue of whether you're allowed to freelance for other publications in the same market and whether they "own" your story once it appears on their pages.

  • I work in PR and I'll often send the same pitch to numerous publications because you usually won't hear back from 95% of them.  When we have a very exclusive story---big news type thing, we strategize and pitch it exclusively to one publication where we would most like the placement.  If they decline, we are open to pitching it elsewhere.

So in your situation, it sounds like they like your story and your work and that is why they are asking if you pitched it elsewhere---because they are considering using it and they don't want to do so if another publication may run it as well.

  • I would email back and say that you did send the piece to several other papers but would be glad to withdrawal the submission elsewhere should they be interested in publishing it. Good luck!
  • Thanks everyone for the advice! I spoke with the paper who emailed back and asked it I pitched to them exclusively. I ended up calling and told the editor the truth, and she said that they do not accept stories if the writer submitted to other publications. She wasn't upset or anything; she was actually really helpful and nice.

    Again, thank you EVERYONE.
