Shipping your car

Hello all,

We are moving across the county in 2 months and we are thinking of shipping my car so we only have to drive one...has anyone done this??  Any advice/companies to use??

 Thanks!

Re: Shipping your car

  • I have....it was kind of a weird experience.   Basically with most companies, you fill out an online form with the dates that you want your car shipped, and they will get bids from shipping companies for you.   The problem is that they can't guarantee that somebody will want to ship your car for you.  When I wanted my car shipped, gas prices went up about a dollar a gallon (right after Katrina), so there weren't any bids, and there was about a three week delay in getting my car shipped, and it ended up costing more than we originally wanted (about $1200 I think, but this was like 6 years ago).   But everything turned out well.

Just remember that you won't get reimbursed for shipping the car.  You MIGHT be able to get reimbursed UP TO the cost of what they would have paid for you to drive it (basically mileage), but you might not....technically I don't think they are supposed to unless you actually drive it, but some bases might submit the paperwork for you anyway.

  • I shipped my car to Hawaii, and a portion of that was land shipping.  I want to say the land portion was about $600.  It isn't cheap, but I'd probably consider it if I ever had a cross country move just b/c the amount of time, gas, and hotels to drive 3000 miles is a PITA.

Depending on the company, you can have them pick it up at your home or drive to a drop-off location.  I choose pickup since they were getting it from my sister, and I wanted to make the process as easy as possible for her.

  • Thank you all!  We are going to look into it by getting quotes and go from there.
  • I recommend you allcoaststransport.com. At least they are working with insured carriers.
  • We've shipped a car twice across country.  We used Dependable Auto Shippers and have 2 great experiences with them.  It cost around $900 to go from coast to coast.  First time I shipped my car I sent it ahead of me so that I wouldn't be stuck without a car at our first duty station where I wouldn't have friends or family to help me with transportation.  Second time we shipped it we sent it only 3-4 days ahead of us as we drove across the country.  It arrived within 2 days of arriving at our new duty station!  I liked shipping our car better than having my husband drive his car and me follow in mine all the way across the country, 2x.  Good luck!
