Where to donate professional clothes in MoCo?

I cleared out a bunch of professional attire and suits from my closet that I rarely wear with the intention of donating them to a non-profit like "Dress for Success". I'm actually having trouble letting go of them because some of them are really nice and in good condition. There's that part of me that thinks, "what if I move into a job where I need to wear suits again?" But the other part of me says that I rarely wear them, I don't like skirts suits anymore, and I have no plans of any job changes.

So, to push me into getting rid of them, I felt like if they were helping other women in need, that I can let them go. For some reason, I thought there was a Dress for Success in MoCo but there's not. There's only one in DC and I don't know if I want to drive all the way down there. So, are there any similar programs in MoCo that you know of? I know I can donate them to a regular thrift store but I wanted to donate them to a specific non-profit that helps women.

Re: Where to donate professional clothes in MoCo?

  • I would call Dress for Success and see if there are any local organizations currently collecting for them.  A synagogue in Olney was collecting for them in their lobby this fall, I just stopped in and dropped off a few suits without having to go downtown.  It wasn't listed on the Dress for Success website.
  • Call Shepherd's Table in Silver Spring - I think they take professional clothes.
  • Thanks ladies. Those are both good options.

  • I donated a bunch of my old suits to Dress for Success, I took them to the dry cleaners in the Milestone (I think it was Crest Cleaners), but this was a few years ago.  I had a hard time getting rid of mine too but I figured if I ever had a job again where I had to wear suits I'd probably need new ones for fit and style. You could also try Boomerangs consigment (they only take things by appointment).

It was really nice getting them out of my closet!
