long weekend (January) trips from Cincy area?

I'm looking to take a long weekend (surprise) trip for H's bday.  I'm willing to drive no more than 7 hours.  That can get me to a variety of bigger towns/areas but I'm not sure where to go.  We're typically beach vacationers so long weekend trips have never been our thing.  I've been looking at the Poconos area in PA, Chicago, Nashville, etc... but really have no idea where to go.  I know there are a lot of "bigger" cities we could visit but I guess I'm just unsure of what to do in the winter.  I'm REALLY a warm-weather person so I have no idea what to do if we went somewhere.  Any ideas?

I thought the Poconos (or even some Virginia ski resorts) could be fun (tubing...I don't ski) but not sure what else we can do in those towns.  I don't want to just go tubing/ice skating then sit in the room.  I think H would like a place that has some night life.  I'm not a BIG drinker but if there were  a town where we could walk to dinner or a bar then back to the hotel it would be ideal.  The only "winter" weekend trip we've ever taken was to Frankenmuth, MI before Christmas.  That's it.  Any ideas??

Thanks!

  • why not just fly someplace warm for a long weekend then?

  • Snowshoe Mountain in WV has skiing/tubing but also an awesome little downtown village area with shopping and nightlife. The dinning was featured on the Travel Channel a few years ago.

  • Chicago is great!  It is the windy city so it would not be my cup of tea in the winter.  There is so much to do and see there (Navy Pier, Magnificent Mile, Shedd Aquarium, Science museum.  Great restaurants (Girl and the Goat, Chicago Chop House, Zed 451).

I just spent a little time in Nashville, wish I had been there longer. Gaylord Hotel, Grand Ole Opry, Belle Meade Plantation and Winery.  I wanted to do the Nash Trash tour, but they were booked when we were there after Christmas.  No restaurants we ate at were that great.

Not sure if Memphis is more than 7 hours, but enjoyed it as well.  We stayed at The Peabody and I loved it, although it is an older hotel.  Loved the grand lobby and the ducks.  Beale street was a lot of fun.  I like Graceland, but not sure everyone would.

TN is further south so should be warmer than we are here in the mid-west.

As far as West Virginia- Staying at The Green Briar is on my to do list.  I also want to go to the Poconos as well and stay at one of those tacky hotels but I don't think my husband will agree to it.

    Happy planning!
