P90X

Has anyone here done this?  DH and I bought it and are going to start on Monday. I am doing it to tone and increase endurance.  DH is doing this to lose weight and hopefully change his lifestyle.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.  Especially tips to stick with it and possible ideas for meals/snacks.

TIA

Re: P90X

  • DH is doing the other program like it called Insanity. My brother has been doing it too. They both like it. I don't have a ton of advice, except to tryand get into a routine of doing it, DH gets up earlyevery weekday and does it in the basement, it helps that there are no distractions at 5:30 am

  • I'm on phase 2 right now. DH has done it before.

It definitely works, but you have to stick with it even when you're sore or tired. DH hasn't stuck with it this round and has been really sporadic in doing it, so he hasn't seen much change, just slight weight loss. if you DH sticks with it he will lost weight easily.  The biggest problem for me is that Tony Horton talking on the videos drives me insane, so after I had done the workouts once, I just mute it and listen to pandora radio or whatever.

One thing I will tell you is that due to all the intense weight lifting in phase 1, you will more than likely gain weight. Obviously, you'll gain muscle mass, but your muscles will be irritated and swell/retain fluid, so if I were you I'd just hide your scale until you're done.  I have had an eating disorder in the past, so I finally had to tell DH to hide our scale because seeing the number go up (even though I know it's not fat) has been really discouraging for me.  I have seen huge changes in my upper body and overall muscles, so I'm happy, but like I said if you are sensitive to the number on the scale, be aware to just let it be.

We are not following the program diet plan, but I generally cook/eat pretty healthy anyway.  I use a lot of websites to get recipes that are weight watchers friendly type meals, so if you're following the meal plan they provide I don't have any advice there.

Good luck!  If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them in case this wasn't helpful, haha.

  • DH and I were doing P90X last Spring and loved it.  I was in "the best shape of my life" as they say on the video.  The only reason we stopped is because I got pregnant, but I intend to start again soon.  It's hard at first but get's easier, I suggest starting with the "Lean Version". The yoga is a b!tch though, it's too long.  Here's some good websites for meals:

  • My SIL and DH have been doing it for a little over 3 years. Well they also did a bit of insanity and seal fit during that time and now they are doing P90X2.

My SIL lost 85 lbs in a year and DH lost about 60. He does it on his lunch hour right now at the gym but before that he did it when he got home from work. SIL does it when she wakes up. They both did the nutrition plan but then decided to alter it. The most important thing is getting enough calories in and eating many small meals. Right now DH eats oatmeal or a low sugar ceral for breakfast with a banana. 1st snack is protien powder, then lunch usually greens without dressing or vinger/oil mix with grilled chicken or steamed veggies with salmon, 2nd snack is protien powder, then dinner which he will usually eat what me and DD do just a lot smaller portion, then 3rd snack is fat free greek yogurt sometimes with about 6 berries but most of the time plain. We use myfitnesspal.com to enter in all of our food. It gives you a good break down of calories, sugars, carbs, etc. Oh and he also eats a lot of fish.

The first few weeks are pretty tough DH was really out of shape and he hurt so bad he would just kind of lay on the sofa afterward. It gets easier but it still hurts. You just have to keep with it and it is important you stick to the schedule. They both really like this program but it is a big lifestyle change. Out of all 4 they have done they still prefer the original P90X.

ETA: he says don't worry about keeping up with the people in the video do the best you can, also he makes his own granola snack mix with nuts, very little dried fruit, seeds, and granola. And he says Costco and GMC have the best protien-vanilla and chocolate are the best. If you can, mix it with milk and a blender bottle is helpful too.

ETA2: If you are on pinterest and type in p90X meals there are a ton of them. We have been trying a few he has found from there.

  • Thank you all for your advice.  It was very helpful, and we are really looking forward to starting.  We already started eating along with the meal plans/ideas, so now we are excited to start the workouts!
