Clicky poll about room planning/designing

We have a guest bedroom. I'm not sure what I want it's function to be right now. I have been debating between making it just a regular guest room, a home office/dressing room and a game room...like, getting an air hockey table or something or a place to play with the Wii and have lots of space. What would you do?

  • It depends. I have a couple of spare rooms. But because I have lots of visitors, I made one into a regular guest room.

My other room, I made into half an office for MH and half a craft room for myself.

So...the big question is how would you get more use of it?

  • How often does it get used as a guest room? If you have a lot of guests, then I say keep it the traditional room. If it's pretty sparse, then make it a guest room and game room combo.

The only reason I say not to do a guest room and office combo is because if you do have company, it's sometimes awkward to have to go in there and work or get business stuff.

  • I'd make it either a half guest/half game room or half guest/half office depending on what you would use more.

  • i'd totally do game room, but we don't have frequent guests... probably because the dogs.

then again, an awesome game room might bring more guests

  • Just evaluate what you want. Will you use the air hockey table a lot? Do you anticipate guests from your home state coming in? Evaluate your needs.

We have two spare rooms. One is mine, the other is hubby's (our families live within 20 minutes of us) and the other room will be H's gun room/office when he gets his FFL

  • Sorry for the late reply :)

I think it would get a lot of use out of any of those. We'll have company fairly often, but there is a Ramada Inn right next door.

We don't NEED any of those types of rooms, either. But it bugs me to think that when we don't have company, a room would be left to just sit. However, I want it to have some kind of sleeping arrangement in it, even if it's just to have another bed to sleep in if DH or I was sick or whatever.

I was kind of thinking about getting a sofa bed and putting it in there.

  • I think a guest room/play room combo would be great. That way if your guests can't sleep they can play Wii :p

  • We just got married in November so our guest room has wedding crap I'm trying to sell in the closet (which I keep closed so people don't have to see it, lol), we have a bed, and we have a desk that has our printer and it keeps all my school stuff and typical office stuff (tape, paperclips, post-its, etc) but we probably wouldn't have to go in there if we had a guest.

How distracting would it be to be a game room? I think it has potential (and I agree that you should get use out of the room when guests are not there), BUT you also want guests to feel comfortable. Would it make sense if I said you want guests to feel like they're sleeping in your guest room rather than your game room?

  • We're getting a bigger apartment soon with a 2nd bedroom.  Our plan is to use the closet for storage (my husband's idea) or separate our clothes/shoes into two closets (my idea).  We are going to put my desk and craft stuff in there along with his video game stuff.  We'll add a cute couch that can pull out into a bed so when we do have guests stay over (which is rare) we can easily turn it into a guest bedroom.
