WWYD- Random (again)

My biggest pregnancy brain issue is my lack of decision making, so I am coming to you ladies for feedback again!

A friend of mine...well, she was a year older than me in high school and we have mutual friends, but are more like acquaintances than friends...offered to convert all of my BG 3.0 diapers from velcro to snaps after seeing a post I wrote on FB. This is such a great thing since I wouldn't have been able to get much use out of them with Ruby otherwise.

The question now is how much to pay her. From the beginning I said I wanted to pay for her supplies and her time. She already had the tool you need, so all she had to buy was the actual snaps, which she said were $10-$15. Now she's saying that is all she wants me to pay! She converted 20 diapers for me, which includes ripping off all of the old velcro and putting snaps on, meaning lots of time!

I looked online found a lady who does conversions and it would have been $75 plus shipping each way for her to do them.  So, I don't feel okay just giving her $15! Ideas? Just a check for a bigger amount? Gift card? Some other type of thank you gift?

  • Maybe a gift card to some place fun/ or crafty/ or spa? I don't think it has to be $75 but maybe enough to acknowledge her hard work?
  • I'd do a gift card.  If she is saying all she wants is $15, she may readily accept a gift card over additional cash.  I agree with you though - if the cost is $75, she certainly deserves more than $15!
  • I bet she really doesn't mind/care, but if you really want to do something extra, an inexpensive gift card to like Dunkin's or Old Navy, or even some nice chocolate chip cookies/banana bread/etc I'm sure would suffice.

  • I'd pay-pay her for the materials, whatever she's saying, and then get her a Dunks card/Starbucks card/something fun to add to it.

This.  It sounds like she may be craft if she has a snap press so maybe a GC to a craft store?

  • I agree with PP - definitely give her the $15 and then a gift card - I'd probably go $25 (restaurant, movies, nail salon, etc.)

  • I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to say that it's probably quite not as time consuming as you think. Taking off velcro is much faster than sewing it on and putting a snap on is only slightly more involved than using a hole punch. I could see her doing it in one evening while watching tv. Of course it is still a great thing that she did for you!

  • I'd give her a gift card for sure.  Contrary to what it seems, it's actually very time consuming and not very fun work (which is why I didn't volunteer).  I'm converting some of ours and it is taking 20-25 minutes just to get the velcro off, and I'm a very experienced seam ripper.  You can't rip it off because you'd rip the diaper.  Instead, you have to use a seam ripper to pull every 5th stitch or so in order for it to come apart smoothly.  The side where they backstitched is especially time consuming because it's not linear.  Once the velcro is off, it only takes 5 minutes or so to add new velcro or snaps. I'm betting she likely has close to 10 hours converting 20 diapers....which is why online it was $75 to get them changed over.  It's almost quicker for me to make a new diaper than it is to convert an older diaper.  I'd honestly give her a nice sized gift card because like I said, the work isn't fun.  Maybe a dinner gift card, or joann fabrics if she's a crafter or even amazon.

  • Thanks for the ideas! I think I'll pay for her the supplies and then do a gift card to Michael's and maybe a smaller one to Starbucks or DD. Like Jackie said, I know the process is really time consuming and tedious, so I want to give her something significant. Plus she has a 1 year old son and works part time, so she's had to find time here and there to work on them.

  • I agree with Jackie - it's wayyyy more time consuming than you think.  I tried to replace the velcro with velcro on some of our dipes.  I gave up and had my seamstress do it.  It was worth the $40 for 6 diapers.
