Canadian Rockies?

DH and I are thinking about taking a trip to the Canadian Rockies this year (we are trying to do research on both this & Yellowstone- hence my other post). We would be coming from Chicago. We have heard wonderful things about this area (Lake Louise, Banff, etc.) but don't know much at all. Would the best way be to fly to Seattle and drive? How long would you allocate to this trip?

Any tips, ideas, must-sees, resources, etc? If you were choosing between this and Yellowstone, which would you choose? Thank you very much!

Re: Canadian Rockies?

  • I flew into Calgary and then went to Banff. Drumheller isn't too far from Calgary either and it was pretty amazing as well. I'm not sure about the driving distance from Seattle but I would think it would be fairly significant but you would probably have a gorgeous road trip.
  • I don't know how a long a drive it would be from Seattle, but it's about 12 hours from Vancouver, so it would be a pretty long drive.  I would suggest flying to Calgary and then it's only about 1 hour to drive to Banff.

As far as things to do it depends on when you go.  In the winter there is really good skiing/snowboarding, snowshoeing, even ice fishing if you're into that.  In the summer there are some really nice hikes, camping, golfing, trail rides, etc.  There are also some hotsprings that are open year round.  Banff is a really nice little town, with some neat shops - I personally really like the candy store.

  • My family went on several family summer vacations back in the late 70's early 80's. One of our favorite places to stay is the lodge at Morraine Lake (on the back of one of the Canadian bills) in the valley of the 10 peaks. I highly recommend this place. We would go over to the Chateau Lake Louise for the day to hike to the tea houses, etc. - enjoy Lake Louise without the high expense and crowds. Morraine Lake is far less crowded and most are day tour buses. We did a lot of hiking and rented canoes. These are my favorite mountains.

We also enjoyed the lodge at Emerald lake. Other cool places - Columbia Ice Fields near Jasper, Medicine Hat Lake (drove by this area during the day), Banff is a neat town. Banff Springs Hotel (we would visit but not stay there).

We always flew in to Calgary and spent at least the first night in Banff.

  • Definitely fly to Calgary.
  • Lake Louise is beautiful.
