Baby Shower Favors- yay or nay

I'm hosting a baby shower in a few weeks. What do you think make good favors?  My co-host wants some kind of plant favor like this: linky  or this:  linky

What do you think?  I always end up throwing stuff like that away.  I'd rather do something like candy.  I hate to spend money on something people will just pitch in the trash.

Thoughts?

Re: Baby Shower Favors- yay or nay

  • I have thrown away every non-edible favor I have ever gotten. My vote is 100% for candy, or something else edible. The trees are cute, but then I'd just feel guilty for throwing away something alive, or try to keep it alive and feel guilty because I'm a sucky gardener and it's going to die anyway :).

  • OMG, those are so cute!  And I would either throw them away or give them away.  I always think that if you are going for favors, the edible route is best.  Or no favors.  That's good too.  You could honestly make or buy mini bundt cakes (a baby "bundt" in the oven!  I kill me) and that would go over probably better.  Well, be utilized anyway.

  • Hmmm...  I guess if she knows all her friends have green thumbs and are a little bit hippy then those would be great favors!  ; )  I agree edible favors are more universally liked and less likely to be thrown away (or die!).  I'd have a conversation with her asking if she really thinks her friends would actually plant/grow the trees or if they'd end up dying on their kitchen counters (this has happened at my house... sad...).  If she really thinks her friends will let the little guys live then go with it!  : )
  • I would probably toss both of those.  I think edible is the way to go.

  • Unless it's edible, don't bother.  I also have never kept a non-food favor.
  • No favors is fine with me, edible favors fine, as I give them to my husband.

99% of the babies I go to showers for, I care for deeply, but the second tree and the message and all that is over the top for me. I'm not sure anyone I know if going to plant a seedling and nurture it into a tree in honor of that child, so I'd feel guilty tossing it, but I would.

  • I say edible favors or no favors...I SO don't have a green thumb and would just end up killing those cute little trees.

If your friend really wants little plants, Target has some little strawberry plants or something in their dollar bins in little terracotta pots.  I wouldn't feel bad about giving people a plant that I only spent a $1 on and have them trow it away.  Just another option for you. :-D

  • I made the cookies in the link below for my friends bridal shower as favors and they were a big hit!

Plus you can personalize them or have them personalized (if you order them rather than make them).

  • I'd pass on the trees. I just went to a baby shower today and we got animal crackers that had been covered in pink or white icing and colored sprinkles as the gift. Super cute and pretty yummy!

My SIL gave away little jars of local honey at my baby shower in MI. I loved that. Very thoughtful and supported a local farmer. Plus, it gets eaten!

Go for food or nothing at all. I take that back, I won a bar of soap playing one of the baby games today. Soap is always good.

We did local honey as our wedding favor! From a place called Honeyville (http://www.honeyvillecolorado.com/ sorry not linky, computer is junk). Everyone loved it and we loved having leftovers ; )
  • Thanks ladies.  That was my gut feeling.  I'll have to see if I can talk co-host out of it.
