Yesterday morning I went to get my blood work done for my 1 hr. glucose test. At the hospital they had a free magazine that you could take home. So I grabbed one and figured I'd check it out at home. Well John beat me to it.. guess what he found... ! Someone decided to name their child Abcde - and they pronounce it Absidy.
What some people don't come up with!

Re: Unique Name - facepalm
Seriously? Poor kid...
M told me that one of his friends who works for the fire department told him about responding to a call once where there was a child involved and they needed to get some information from the father on the girl. So friend is talking to the father, and sees that the name written down is K--A. So friend, of course, asks how it is pronounced. The father gets all offended and says something to the effect of "Yo, it's Kadasha" like it should be SO obvious. Now you tell me how much hope of a good career that poor girl has.
How is anyone going to take her or poor little Abcde seriously?
That is a really unfortunate name choice. I seriously wonder about people sometimes.
On a related note, I've seen some unique names recently that I thought would be super weird but the people with those names carried them well. I met a girl named Lyric (like song lyrics) and a girl named Miracle.

My friend's daughter is a Lyric and I've had a Miracle and a Unique at one of my centers. At least they are real words that people can spell and pronounce. Poor Abcde :-(
I had a dad come in to register his daughter a few years ago. When I asked him how to spell it he gave me the first 2 letters and then showed me his arm and said, "like this." I can't for the life of me think of this little girls name right now.
... at least it's easy to spell?
I still think the worst I've seen is shithead (sha-theed). That kid is so going to get teased growing up.

Ouch.. that wouldn't be a good name for a kid!

I've heard the Abcde one before, as well as the La-a. I always thought they were jokes, but who knows, people come up with some weird stuff. My aunt who's been teaching for 28 years has had her share of odd names of students, especially in SoFl where it is just a melting pot of tons of different cultures and languages and people not really understanding the meaning of words, especially in other languages.
Tony and I go round and round on names all the time. He wants something a little more unique or ethnic, and I want a normal, common, classic name. One that people aren't going to misspell or mispronounce all the time, and one that can easily be found on the racks with the other personalized items. But I guess he doesn't always get it because he grew up with a normal name, not a difficult first and last name like I did. I'm still having to correct people with my name and never ever give it at restaurants when we get put on a waiting list, it's been screwed up too many times.
So I was looking over there and found that there were16 sets of twins named Heaven/Nevaeh in 2010.
