Do your friends/family like your (hypothetical) children's names?

Mom asked if we had picked out names for any future kids we might have.  I told her the names, and it was pretty clear she seriously hated our girl name. (No, I am not pregnant.  No, we aren't trying yet).  My feelings were kind of hurt, but I couldn't really say anything because she was so indirect about her dislike of it.

Re: Do your friends/family like your (hypothetical) children's names?

  • We've never had a discussion of this sort with our family. But we have definitely given the side eye to my brothers name choices for his kids.
  • Ours are pretty mainstream and traditional, so I haven't noticed any obvious side eyes. But I do often tell people they're not welcome to give an opinion on our names because we don't want outside influence. It was hard enough to come up with a list of names that we didn't have negative associations with--I don't need others' negative associations too!

  • I've vaguely discussed names with my mom and sisters and while they really like my names, I'm pretty sure most people would side-eye them. Not because they're made up or anything, but because they are very rarely used and because I tend to love boys' names for girl names.

  • Garrett is the only boy name we ever discussed--DH picked it out, I loved it so it was done. No one ever said anything negative so I assume they all like it. There were a few girl names I mentioned to my mom and sister that they shot down, but DH had shot them down too so whatever! I wanted to be one of those people who didn't care what others thought about name choices, but it bothered me when someone (specifically DH and close family) said they didn't like a girl name that I liked. We went to the hospital without a girl name picked out....We're screwed if our next one is a girl.

The real question though--what's the name you like? Big Smile

Gemma/Jemma, not sure which spelling we like best.  I sort of favor the G.

    Gemma is a great name!

Our top boy's names are August and Elliott. Both get a slight side-eye, but I don't care. If and when we have a boy, they'll get used to it.

  • I actually know someone named Gemma.

I have a list, and once shared it with my friends. They liked almost all of them. Some are a little old-fashioned, but I like old-fashioned names. I don't know how H feels about them. I think I read the list to him once but I don't think it's something he's seriously thought about.

We do have a rule: you have to put the word "Doctor" or "Justice" in front of the name. If it sounds silly, then it doesn't go on the list.

  • Boymom, I like Gemma/Jemma.

McG, Elliott seems to be pretty common now. Can't see a reason for someone to side-eye that one!

Fuzzy, we did the exact same thing. We also eliminated names that had a chance at an immature or slang nickname.

  • I think when we get pregnant we're not going to tell anybody the baby names we pick and they can just wait until the baby's born to find out. I get my feelings hurt easily and my mom is very opinionated lol. We'll probably tell our couple friends we hang out with every week, but that's about it.

August and Elliot are A+ in my book!

  • I think the Elliott side-eye is partly because lots of people are using it as a girl's name. :( Weird, since I'm pretty sure that all stems from the show 'Scrubs.'

  • My mom and sister hate our girl name, Hadlee. They tolerate our boy name, Brenner. It doesn't phase me at all. It's my kid, not theirs.

I like Gemma! I associate it with being badasss because of the show Sons of Anarchy. She's a tough cookie on that show.

I like Elliott. I've always thought of it as a traditional boy's name.

  • I love the name Gemma!

There are two names (one boy, one girl) that I have always loved. I made the mistake of mentioning the boy name to my MIL and SIL who made fun of it.  They then told several other family members the name and now it is somehow a family joke.  Rolling eyes.  I have moved on from those names and have picked out two others - for some reason DH and I talked about this at great length at our fifth anniversary dinner.

IF we decide to have kids we will tell no one the name or the sex.  Whenever someone mentions DH and I have kids in front of my MIL she always says "Oh God, no."  Poor woman.  She will probably die if we get KU.  It is hard enough I am her kid's wife - can you imagine if I was his baby mama too?  LOL.

  • Our parents both know our hypothetical kids names. We generally like traditional/old fashion names so they really don't have a problem with them. Although I told my mom 2 girl names that we were talking about which are Ruby and Norah. She said she didn't care for them too much but she did tell me it didn't matter what she thought since it was my kid.

Love love love Norah. My cousin named her daughter Nora and it's just so sweet.

  • Yes, I got and still get the side eye from DHs family.  I just don't care.  Just wait until we have another one, boy or girl we will probably get the side eye.  ;)
