Would you ever?

Participate in a polar plunge? I'm just curious because a lot of people around here do it for charity. My Aunt is doing it this year to raise money for the Special Olympics. Which is super awesome for her because she had twins 9 years ago and one of the boys died 4 days after birth. After the autopsy she found out that he had downs syndrome, and ever since then she's been working in schools with special needs children.

I hate the cold so much, and I hate swimming, not to mention the bodies of water where they're doing this around me are pretty nasty (we call the Lake in our town "Lake Winne-septic" because everyone knows most of the sewage is dumped in there. I've fallen in this lake myself a few times and it's pretty gross.) I love that this is for charity, but I would never even consider doing it. I think I'll make a donation to her cause from my nice heated house instead! haha

Re: Would you ever?

  • NO way. I don't think I could do it either. We have events like this nearby us too and I always think to myself that these people must be insane, lol. I would much rather do a walk or marathon to raise money for charity.

  • I agree there is no way I could do that. I hate the cold!

ETA:  And I definitely would not want to get in water with sewage no matter what temp it was. Eww!

  • I don't think I would ever do that! I'm from the South. Freezing cold anything doesn't sound appealing to me! I'd donate to the cause instead.
  • I'll stick with my marathons for charity!

Do you know how long they are in the water for?

  • I couldn't. I would turn into an ice pop. I would just give a donation. If it was like a 5K or something I would do it, but not a polar plunge.
  • I've had the chance to do it in the past and I was NOT interested.

For all the reasons that you've already stated... I would not go into the cold water during the coldest part of the year, and I definitely would not do it in a lake that is suspected to have sewage matter in it (they do it in a lake around here with the same issues)

If you donate and don't show up the coordinators of the event would probably even be happier than if you wanted to participate!  I think that they do this because they assume that is what half the people will say/do and their event stays small.

  • I have never done a Polar Plunge but my brother has.  You literally jump in, get wet, and jump back out.  I hate cold weather but would consider it if it was for a cause that I really support.

  • my MOH did a polar plunge for special olympics last year! she raised a lot of money and she had a blast. a group of girls from our sorority did it together and they all dressed up in silly outfits to make it fun. i always donate money when my friends get involved in something like that for charity, and I think i gave more than usual to her because it was something that i would never do!
  • No no, and no again! There was one in Rochester every year into Lake Ontario, which is also quite a nasty place, and I think it would make me sick to watch not only people diving into the icy waters, but to think about what else was in there! There are much more sanitary and warm ways to raise money for charity :)

  • I definitely give my Aunt lots of credit for doing this! I'm hoping that by the end of February maybe it'll be a little warmer, I would hate for her to have to do it in a negative temperature! I feel bad because I'm pretty sure the only pledge she has so far is the $50 she put forward, I'm hoping she gets more towards her $500 goal. Hopefully we'll have some extra money next paycheck to send her way!
  • Since I live at the beach, there's a lot of Polar Bear plunges going on here. H actually wants to do it. Personally I think he's nuts...the ocean is still freezing in May so I can't imagine it in January.
  • Brrr, I don't think I could do it, I hate the cold! I give people credit who can do it lol.

  • i'm not an ocean person...& the only time i can stand water being cold is if it's hot out...so no..don't think i could lol

    never. ever.

    hahahaha. My thoughts exactly!

  • No, never! I'm not a very good swimmer anyway, and I'm not a real fan of being cold either, so I don't think I would voluntarily sign up for something like that.
