Golden Globes commentary (pre-show)
I didn't want to clutter up dr. g's thread - thanks for setting that up, btw!
I was totally torn between Mildred Pierce and Downton Abbey. I think I ended up going with Downton - it's got the buzz at the moment and I'm sure it's big with the Foreign Press. Kate was amazing in Mildred though and it was a beautiful period piece - just not as beautiful I guess as England. lol
I'm very curious as to how this is going down. Didn't have any clue with a lot of these. One of best friends is going to a GG after party. So jealous.
Re: Golden Globes commentary (pre-show)
I think my picks will go down in flames because I chose what I want to win rather than what will win. For example, Claire Danes.
I think Kate will win for Mildred Pierce but that's it.
A lot of these are really hard to pick. I'm going with critical consensus from another site, and there are a few that I am VERY doubtful about. For example, I find it very hard to believe that Matt LeBlanc, Kelsey Grammer, and Jessica Lange are going to win their categories. I am very tempted to change to Maggie Smith and Steve Buscemi.
I think that the hard categories are the opposite of last year's Oscars. I have no clue whether it's going to be Viola Davis or Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt or George Clooney, the screenplay for Moneyball or Descendants. On the plus side, though, I think the supporting actor and actress, director, and picture might be easy.
Have you seen "Boss"? Kelsey Grammar is honestly FANTASTIC in it. If it were a movie it would be an Oscar-worthy performance. I must have missed that he was nominated...I'm going to change my pick! The only disadvantage is I'm not sure how many people have seen it...and Bryan Cranston is a much more "known quantity" given his prior wins.
I do the same thing, though (vote for who I want to win, rather than who I think will win). Especially when there are great performances in more obscure stuff, because in particular I doubt the HFPA's diligence in looking at screeners, etc. But, at one point during a Homeland episode (when she has her manic breakdown) I looked over at DH and said, "Claire Danes is acting the SH!T out of this thing!" so I feel comfortable picking her at least as someone who deserves to win -- and if she loses I'll just b!tch about her being robbed. ;-)
I think the prize should be some sort of Oscar badge for a sig, but I don't have the Photoshop skills to make one. I tried last year, and it was pisspoor. And I didn't win, so there was that. lol
omg - I saw Shame last night.
Michael Fassenberger or whatever his name deserves the award - if only because no A-list Hollywood actor would ever even think of touching that role.
Frankly, I'm not blown away by any of the male or female best actor performances. Brad Pitt? Clooney? I like them okay as actors, but are these roles really their best work? Doubtful. Viola Davis was fine in the Help, but best actress fine? I don't know. I haven't seen the Iron Lady, but I'm pretty sure Meryl was transcendent in it. But that's just Meryl being Meryl. lol
No, I never saw Boss, never knew it existed until I saw that Grammer's favored for it. I am so excited because Mildred Pierce is finally on my Blockbuster queue. I can't wait to see it. I also have Big Love and The Borgias.
ETA: Even if she was good, don't you just hate Claire Danes? I liked her alright in My So-Called Life, but she seems like such an entitled b____, not to mention the whole Billy Crudup (sp.?) thing when Mary Louise Parker was pregnant.
Of the best actor and actress hopefuls, I've only seen Davis, DiCaprio, and Pitt. I wouldn't mind if Davis and Pitt won, but I find it hard to believe they're the best. I just want Meryl to lose because I don't want her to have three Oscars; she's not Ingrid Bergman and shouldn't be within sniffing distance of Kate Hepburn. (Kate even denigrated her acting.) In case you don't know, Ingrid Bergman is the only actress with three Oscars and Kate has 4.
I can't believe Davis's performance is good enough to win, though. I feel like if she wins, it's more about other factors, not the performance on the screen. On the other hand, Streep's movie isn't that good, I've heard. It's Rotten Tomatoes # is very low, and I think it's low enough that it'd be the lowest RT # ever for a Best Actress winner, even lower than The Reader.
I have little doubt that Spencer and Plummer will win the Oscar.
I just joined in on this. I did a mix of stuff I wanted to win and stuff I think will win. I kind of hate most of the TV noms though, so I feel meh about whoever wins those.
In the past few years, I've found that I care less and less about the HFPA and the Globes. So many of the nominees/winners are so weird.
I used to hate her but her work on Homeland has totally turned me around.
I don't know anything about her personal life.
