Cherry Creek School District?
Do they have kindergarten information sessions? All I see is the kindergarten registration which I think it basically turning in the required paperwork. We are trying to decide whether to send DD in 2012 or 2013 and an information session/open house would help! Thanks.
Re: Cherry Creek School District?
Thanks. I was thinking we may need to just contact the school.
Their website (the individual elem school) is not as helpful as many of the others which is also annoying.
Did your home school give any idea of if the average age of the starting kindergartners? She is a week before the cut off so we are torn about what to do. I have a sense that many kids are "redshirted" around here, but not sure if that is actually true.
From a mental health perspective (I'm a school counselor, after all, even if I don't have a job...), you're probably right that a repeat in an environment where she's already comfortable, doing some review of things she already knows, could increase her confidence greatly. It also may have no effect on her whatsoever... you know her best. Being one of the older kids in her class and already knowing some of the material is likely to give her a boost and make her more comfortable buuuuut the only way to get her more confident in trying NEW things (which you said was the issue) is to actually DO new things. You could always try incorporating new experiences (rec classes, library offerings, home depot kids stuff) on the weekends to help her in that area while she's getting the boost of being the experienced kiddo at preschool : ) Just a thought. GL!
That's just the week you go to the administration offices for CCSD to register.
The school also have a K roundup for kids to go in and parents to ask questions. I'd call the school.
I considered redshirtiNg my oldest, who has a July bday. I read an article in the nyt about a study on long term effects that changed my Mind. Though short term gains can be confidence etc. long term it's better for them to be pushed. The ones who benefited the most from red shirting were the other kids in the class bc they were then pushed by an older peer.
My young K has done great this tar he has a little catching up, but hose differences usually even out quickly.
I also have an August birthday. Didn't you turn 21 the summer before your senior year of college, though? Or were you a whole year younger than that?
We aren't in Cherry Creek, so I can't answer that question.
I did want to say that my daughter's birthday is the day before the kindergarten cut-off and I stressed about whether to send her for YEARS. In the end we ended up sending her on time and not red-shirting her. She has done GREAT. We really relied on her preschool teacher (who also was a para in the afternoon for a kindy class) to let us know her thoughts on if she were ready or not. She thought we should send her and that DD would have been bored if we kept her back. The first week of school I discovered that almost half the class was 6 or about to turn to 6 and I thought maybe we made the wrong decision since DD wouldn't be 5 for another month. But she has done great. At parent teacher conferences her teacher said we made the right decision and DD is thriving.
The difference from your situation though is that DD is very outgoing, not shy at all. If she had been, we might have kept her back. It's a really tough decision to make, I agonized over it and still sometimes do! Good luck!!
