Should I watch Downton Abbey?
I have heard a lot of people raving about this show. I have never watched. I see that Season 2 just started. Should I watch Season 1 on Netflix and get caught up?
ETA: Just fixed the title.
Re: Should I watch Downton Abbey?
YES! If you do decide to watch the show, do watch the 1st season.
It continues subplots into the next season.
If you like period pieces (such as Forsythe Saga), you will enjoy it.
I started watching the second season first and was a little confused so I am going back and rewatching the first season just to get the background information and a better grasp of who is who. Plus the show is somewhat addicting.
I don't think you will be disappointed
I am like a period-piece Queen. I can't believe that I never watched this but I guess it's sort of easy to miss the boat on these (shorter) British series.
YES! I have been WAITING for season 2!
Season 1 is great - and there aren't that many episodes for you to catch up on. You'll definately learn what happened with some of the charters to build the intregue. Even DH forgot what Mary and Matthew were fighting over (and that was a major plot line!).
You can still enjoy season two without season 1 - - but you'll understand the characters better if you go to netflix.
Sherlock is also awesome. Although it is a modern day interpretation. A very good interpretation.
They do so much with 4-8 episodes compared to the American 22-24 episodes per season.
I actually like this format better as well. I find that US shows have too many episodes that aren't as good as some others, as they could be. It's like the writers run out of ideas.
If you love period dramas, you'll love this one.
I might be biased (I'm English) but I've never found better period dramas than the ones made by the BBC.
Check out also The Forsyte Saga, Gormenghast (sp?), any of the Jane Austen adaptations. Not seen Colin Firth as Darcy? You should!
Most of the Austen adaptions are probably from the early 90s, but in recent years they redid some of them again. Brilliant, yet again. In fact, I like some of the newer ones better than the older ones.
both seasons 1 and seasons 2 are excellent! I watched season 1 on amazon instant streaming (free for Prime members) and season 2 on youtube
now we are recording on PBS and dh is going to watch the whole series with me.
Dame Maggie Smith kicks ass

Thanks for the suggestions. I *think* I actually have seen all of Austen adaptations. It's almost embarrassing.
Have you seen "Lost in Austen"? It's on Netflix streaming now. It's really good...about a modern-day London woman who goes into the world of P&P. Sounds cheesy, but it's really fun if you're a Pride and Prejudice fan.
I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but good.
