Houses near power plant?

In one of the areas we're looking into buying a house, there is a coal burning power plant close by.  Some houses start a few streets over from the plant, which I wouldn't consider at all.  One neighborhood DH wants to look at is about one mile away from the plant.  I'm not sure if that's still too close.  What factors should I be looking into?  How much of a distance would you be okay with?

Re: Houses near power plant?

  • I don't know what distance I would be ok with. However, the EPA recently passed some laws requiring power plants to reduce Nitrous Oxide and Sulfur Dioxide by 2014.  I would google to see if you can see what company owns that plant and see if they've installed these scrubbers already.  If so, the air surrounding should be clean, it's just a matter of seeing it everyday and that's something you need to decide if you can live with.  Several coal-burning plans around the country are going to be shut down soon because they are old and the companies would rather take them offline than get them up to EPA standards.

Most of the plants in my area are scrubbed already better than the EPA standards but there is one (a little further away) that is owned by a different company that is not clean.
