For those TTA, what birth control do you use? Do you like it?
I've been on the pill (Sprintec) for awhile and it's been fine, but the past few months I've gotten really bad about taking them at the same time every day, even though I have an alarm set on my phone. So much so that this month we're using condoms as backup and I've had some break through bleeding.
I'm scared of the shot because I've heard it really messes with your hormones and has caused a lot of women to gain 20+ pounds.
Has anyone used the nuva ring, an iud, or something other than condoms/the pill? (I'm young and never been pregnant, so I'm not even sure I could get an iud, but thought I'd ask about it)
Thanks ladies!
Re: Speaking of birth control
I'm not using BC pills, so I can't speak to the different brands really well, but I'd caution against using the Nuva ring. I've heard that it has caused more health problems than regular pills. My cousin used to be on it and had a miserable experience, and another friend of mine had a friend from HS who died from using it.
Honestly, we've been happy charting. It's easy, reliable, cheap, and it's helped doctors figure out what's going on with my body (hence the surgery I had a few weeks ago). I know it's not for everyone though!

Us too. Charting isn't for everyone but for me it's easy and cheap and we'll turn it around when its time to TTC.

http://www.tcoyf.com/ <--- start there. I would go to the library or B&N and flip through Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler (the website I sent you is the matching site with the book). It's worth the read even if you decide not to go that route! Really informative, a lot of ladies around the boards have read it even though they weren't using charting as their birth control method.
And there is a good amount of us around here that chart, so we'd be willing to help you out with questions and stuff

I'm using the Mirena IUD. I have had it since August and I am really starting to love it. I was having major breakthrough bleeding and no pill helped. I had been on pills since I was 13 (I'm 26 now). I have not had a baby and yeah it hurt when they put it in but not as much as I would have thought. On pills I always had lowered libido and I am finally feeling normal in that aspect. My breakthrough bleeding has taken until now to even out, but I just stuck with it and it is much better. I love not having to remember to take a pill. It isn't for everyone but I am loving it.

They make non-latex condoms, you know that right? The Brand called Skyn has a ton - they sell them in target.

Did the doctor give you a hard time about prescribing it for you? We don't want kids for 5-7 years, but I've heard that doctors can be pretty against giving them to women who haven't had kids.
Thank you
I love how helpful and supportive Juneville is.
I chart a little differently...I use the Creighton Model which charts mucus instead of temperature, though it's still just as effective!

I use birth control pills, Femcon Fe (actually now I use the generic, Zeosa). My doctor put me on this specific brand because it is supposed to have lower instances of breakthrough bleeding, but I still have problems occasionally.
Most of the times that I do get breakthrough bleeding I've noticed tend to be "user error" or when I take a pill more than a half hour late. I don't understand why that should happen after such a short time - I've just chalked it up to my body being extra sensitive to hormone fluctuations. I purchase TCOYF a few months back but haven't read it yet. My schedule is so varied that I don't know if temping at the same time everyday is right for us at this time.

I've been on Seasonique for 3 years and I really like it. I do have some breakthrough bleeding from time to time, but the last few cycles of it have been great--no bleeding. I was on Depo Provera (the shot) for 5 years before taking Seasonique, and it was FABULOUS. I loved not having to remember taking a pill, and I never had bleeding issues. It did cause me to gain some weight, but for me, the benefits outweighed the negatives. My doctor has recommended that I take Mirena, but since it's not covered by my insurance I've opted against it. She mentioned that inserting it could be painful, and wasn't concerned that I'd never had kids. If my insurance covered it, I would have definitely gone that route.

Sam--Your concern was one of the reasons why I chart the mucus, not my temperature. It's done at the end of the day no more than 15 minutes before you go to bed. It's much less restrictive for those who have unusual schedules like me!

I've tried a couple different BC pills and contraceptives, including the ring. I really really liked the Nuva Ring, until I stopped using it. When I stopped I realized how raw/tender it had made me from month to month.
It was almost like I had a yeast infection (I would assume since I've never actually had a yeast infection) for the first 2-4 days after I had inserted it. It was always right after I was off my period and when we wanted to make up for the lost time of the period week, so it was incredibly painful!
I have a lot of friends (w/o babies) who have had their doctors give them an IUD. I don't know if this sounds bad, but you can almost always find at least one in your area that will give you one, even if yours says no. Ask around to other friends/coworkers/classmates and see if any of them have been able to get one, I'm sure that their doctor would let you get one too.

I would not go anywhere near the shot (Depo or Lupron Depo) because studies are showing that it induces early menopause and osteoperosis because of the high hormonal content. I would try the ring if you are having trouble sticking to your pill. Unless you can force yourself to become very diligent about taking your pill, the ring might be your best bet. Is the time that you normally take your pill just not working out for you? You can change the time you take it.
