I just want to see how your experience is. I started metformin 2 weeks ago, the XR kind. My PCOS got a little out of control, I've gained about 10lbs in the last 3 months because I couldn't manage it anymore on my own.
I know it's only been 2 weeks, but I feel like it's not working like it should. I've been doing a low carb-low calorie diet. I haven't lost a lb (I know, only 2 weeks-but serioulsy!?). If I forget to take my metformin with supper, I'll take it with a small snack. Last night was the worst though, I got the shakes/nasea, etc. I had to basically shove everything in site in my mouth to make me stop feeling like I was going pass out/puke from hunger. Seriously wtf is up with that?!
I guess I just need to vent. I'm trying so hard to lose weight, but it's not working. I've never been this heavy. The other night I couldn't help but cry to Jeff about it.
Any advice? When did you start to notice a difference/feel normal on the metformin? (I realize metformin isn't for weight loss, but Dr.C said it would help alot. Plus it should help with me feeling starving all the time)
Re: Metformin Users...please come in!
Generally it works pretty quickly but XR is supposed to be extended release and not give you sugar low's like that. (dizziness, nausea) If it happens again, try some orange juice or something sugary to get you back on your feet. Then when you're feeling better have some good protein.
Maybe talk to your Dr to change your dose. ?? I'm sorry this isn't working out for you. I know how awful and ups and downs can be. Hug!
When you're insulin resistant you tend to store fat instead of using it for energy. Metformin is meant to help your body use insulin more efficiently and effectively.
This is what a typical day looks like...
Slim fast or similiar shake and a piece of on toast
Snack-cheese and a couple crackers
Lunch-something like a Tina sandwhich & veggies
Snack-usually apple
Dinner-a small portion of whatever I make.
Im trying to stick to. 1500-1700 cal diet, but good god I'm starving!!
I would ditch the shakes for breakfast. You need more protein/fiber. I boil a bunch of eggs on Sunday so I can grab them for breakfast. I usually have an egg and some fruit with greek yogurt. I also eat oatmeal. I know its not low carb, but it helps with my milk supply and it keeps me full until lunch.
For lunch, ditch the bread with your sandwich and use low carb wraps or lettuce for your tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, etc.
Morning snack, add a veggie. Afternoon snack, add a protein.
Its so hard to eat right with work, kids, life in general. I've found that I do better if I take the time on Sunday night to fix things. I boil eggs, clean/cut up veggies/fruit, portion yogurt, etc. I also cook chicken ahead of time to throw into wraps or salads.
I feel your pain with the weight loss (or lack there of). I'm struggling right now (partly because of breastfeeding!). I'm anxious to go back on met to help with my blood sugars because I know they're out of control right now, as are my pcos symptoms. But I know that the low carb thing works. Its how I got my cycles somewhat normal and was able to get knocked up! lol!
Hang in there and if you ever want to pm me here or fb, feel free to!
