PIP - weekend projects

Fair warning - this is going to be quite different than most of what I see posted here.  Probably better for craftster, but it seems so dead lately :(

Since I whined about my sewing machine, I'll show you what I have done limping it along this weekend.  I'm making a steampunky pirate costume for a pirate costume party I'm going to in a few weeks,

Here is what I am thinking for the whole outfit.  The jacket is a mockup to test the pattern.  I'm trying to decide if I should do the jacket in a deep purple or just go with pants, corset,  and top.

Here is a closeup of the corset.  I LOVE it.  I still need to edge it, but I want to get the grommets all in first (I was 4 short in the back) and make sure it fits right before I close it up.  It actually seems a bit big right now, so I may take an inch or 2 off the back.  Also, the pants are just safety pinned (see previous post about the button hole failure).  Once they are buttoned, they shouldn't gape.  I hope.  I made them without a pattern and changed my mind 3 times in the process.  And I don't know if I like them in the end.  *sigh*

And the polymer clay stuff for accessories.

Re: PIP - weekend projects

  • Fun stuff!

I really like the corset and the mockup of the jacket.

  • This is the jacket I am trying to copy (I was only mocking up the bodice).  I tried using McCalls 6442 view C.  I think I may have to draft a pattern from scratch for this.

  • That's really cool- the details are going to be amazing!

So, is it a Gasparilla thing? Are you a Pastafarian? Or do you just have cool friends? Pirate party! :)

  • Truth be told, its a pirate theme night on The Rock Boat (a cruise we are going on in a few weeks with about 15 bands).  The website for this year's cruise is steampunked out, so I was building on that.

I do have cool friends though.  There are about 30 of us going.

  • That looks like so much fun! Nice jacket! :) Can't wait to see it all finished. I love costuming.

  • I am totally impressed that you are just making it up as you go! Please post the final pics :) I love the corset fabric. Eta: fixed wrong word.
  • It looks great! I hope to see final pics, too.

At first, I was thinking more along the lines of Ren Faire, and I was completely puzzled by your accessories. But steampunk makes a lot more sense! Very neat.
